A question about the Antec Super Lanboy

A question for those that use the Antec Super Lanboy and take them to Lan parties on a regular basis. I'm curiuous how big of a HSF is installed in your Super Lanboy case and if you have any problems transporting it(becoming loose or falling off). More specifically those that use the new Conroe processors combined with a aftermarket hsf. I'm wondering how big of a hsf that can be used and safely moved about. Example: placed in a car and transported to another site.

Thanks,
Skott

If you carry your confuser in your vehicle between the axles (for less shock to begin with) and lay it on its side with the mobo down, you shouldn't have too much stress from a properly mounted HSF. But I suppose a lot of lateral Gs from cornering or braking could stress the mobo with one of those humongoid (and totally unnecessary) tower heat sinks on it.

I'd say that if you're planning a mobile system, choose your cooling solution with that in mind. Or you could tether the top of a tower cooler in several directions with zip ties to take some of the stress off of the mobo mounting. I always tether a tower cooler from above (like to the bottom of the PSU) anyway to relieve stress. For travel, just tether in three or four directions. Small diameter bungees could be an alternative to zip tie... ;)

Yeah, I'm trying to get an idea how big of a hsf I can safely use. I been asking around and more people seem to use the 9500/9700 in their portables moreso than something like a Tunig Tower or Scythe product.

I'd suggest a Thermalright U-120 if you're going to be transporting it around. It's a pretty light heatsink and still damn effective.

Thanks for that tip, Ayah. I'll be sure to look at that hsf.

Edit:
I see the Zalman 9700 is 764g and the Ultra 120 is 745g in weight. Do you happen to know which of the two has a shorter profile? By that I mean in overall height.

You might look into the SI-128 as well since it sits lower to the board and will provide a smaller moment arm (i.e. less force on the motherboard since it's shorter than the tower heatsinks). I'd also recommend doing like Zepper suggested and transport the case on it's side with the motherboard on the bottom side.

That being said, my buddy has a Super Lanboy with a Scythe Ninja and he carries the thing with the included strap. As long as it's from the car to the LAN than even a monster tower style heatsink would probably be fine.

I transport my P180 with a XP-120 in it more than once a week. I keep it upright in the car and put a seatbelt on it like it was person. I've been doing this for over a year now with no problems.

Definitely check out Thermalright's products - they are much lighter than most brands and still perform extremely well. Also be sure to take into consideration that some heatsinks include the fan in the overall weight - others do not.

Yeah, I have noticed that. Thanks for the info.

If I were moving my system around, I would not go bigger than a Zalman 9500. It weighs 530g, but AMD's and Intel's specifications call for a maximum heatsink weight of ~450g. Any bigger, such as the 9700 (764g) or the 7700 (918g), is big enough that I would treat the computer as a piece of antique furniture while moving it.

And be sure to lay the computer motherboard-side-down, so that bumps in the road (peak jerk in any direction) don't rip off your heatsink (and likely, part of the motherboard, too).

I have a Scythe Infinity with a big fan on it, and I LAN quite often. I'm just careful with my case (Lian-Li 60 something) and transport it on its side and whatnot, haven't had a problem.

Yeah, I was thinking of staying with the Zalman because of its lighter weight compared to Scythe products. I have a 9500 in my current rig and I simply love it. Although I would like to try a 9700. It may not cool as much as the bigger Scythe and Tuniq but if it gives me a pretty good OC that I can be happy with and not cause travel problems then I'm cool with that. I havent decided on a mobo yet so I gotta wait till I make that decision before I decide on the hsf.

My stepbrother's new rig is in a super lanboy with a Tuniq Tower and he was able to fit it in just fine. As far as transportation goes, ideally keep it lying on it's side with the heatsink facing up and it should be fine. I have been taking rigs with oversized heatsinks to LAN parties for years and have never had an issue with models that bolt through the mobo with a backplate.
