a question about raid

if you have one drive already holding information (just storage, not OS) and you want to set up a mirror raid system, can you do it without losing the information on the first drive? will it just make an identical copy of the drive?

Depends on the controller (if you're using hardware RAID). The other answer is yes, it will just what its name says, mirror it.
