A question about mechanical pencils

Why the hell do most mechanical pencils come with such a small eraser? I can use it for like 2 days before it's completely gone. Why even include an eraser if it's only good for 3 uses before it either falls off from erasing or goes down to the barrel, by which time I scratch and rip the paper that I'm erasing on :| Does the manufacturer assume that we all carry around a separate eraser?

BTW I'm referring to the Zebra M-301, and all the identical clones of it with an eraser the size of a grain of rice.

They put the erasers there so the lead doesn't fall out. Duh!!

But I hate that too. It's like if I was so precise taht I never needed to erase anything, I'd use a pen.

how did that eraser only last you two days? what are you erasing!? 😛 they do last a short amount of time but atleast i can replace the one in mine. but i usually just carry a second black eraser. they are more effective anyway.

Stop making mistakes? 😛

Get an electric eraser with the white media. Those things rock and some people use them for other things I won't mention. :Q

Sexy.

THEY MAKE ELECTRIC ERASERS?! OMG.

They have some pencils that have long erasers and you can actually get refills for the erasers too. I forget who makes it but I used to get it from Office Depot.

Why not just go buy a pack of the cheap pink erasers? I think they're only a couple cents for a 3-pack.

I've found the eraser that come with any kind of pencil invariably crappy. I always used a separate eraser. The soft white ones are the best

I dunno, but my mechanical pencils have 1.5" long x 0.25" diameter. Maybe you should buy different mechanical pencils?

The Pentel Side FX pencils are great. I've used many, many mechanical pencils before and this is the best one yet.

The construction is very robust and does not break. Many pencils like this that require you to twist the end to extend the long eraser actually break at the area where you twist. The plastic there is sometimes so thin that if you twist too much, the eraser and the platform that the eraser sits on will actually extend and crack right through the rotator ring. The Side FX has a very thick rotator ring, and will not crack.

Replacement erasers are easily found.

In fact, the erasors that are used in Pentel Clic Erasers easily fit into these pencils. Just cut off a two inch long section and refill it right up.

BTW, the erasers used in the Clic Erasers erase REALLY well.

Pencils are for girls. I use a pen. If I make a mistake, I scratch it out and continue. Don't have the patience to erase and definitely don't care enough to keep things super neat.

math and science homework does not mate well with pens.

I just stick one of those pink eraser caps on my mechanical penciles. It sticks a bit at first when you try to push more lead out, but it eventually wears down a bit and stops doing that.
I go through a few of those pink things per semester - my mind moves a lot faster than my hands can write (my writing, to be neat, is painfully slow), so it's like having a read-ahead buffer, where my hands will just read random spots in the buffer. Result: I start writing the next word before the preceeding one is finished. I also tend to confuse letters and numbers. 3 and e, and sometimes t and f. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I have no difficulty reading upside down (could do that since I was in grade school) or in a mirror.

I love those pencils, easily the best I've ever used.

My only complaint is the erasers are kind of hard to find. You can't usually get them in stores, so what I do is wait until I need to order something from Staples that's more than $50, then add a bunch to my order to keep me stocked up for a while.

The eraser is about 2 inches long and the pencil itself is sturdy. When I was taking classes, a single eraser would last me an entire semester or more.
