I am thinking about getting a Compaq 900Z (~$800 - $900!) which use DDR memory. Is this the same type of DDR that a desktp uses?

No, laptop memory is about half the width and uses:
DDR: 200 Pin SO-DIMM
SDR: 144 Pin SO-DIMM

Desktop Ram is larger and uses:
SDR: 168-Pin DIMM
DDR: 184 Pin DIMM
