A question about DV cameras (canon zr70mc)

I bought a canon zr70mc with the impression that i could just link it to my computer via my motherboard's onboard firewire port (Abit IS7). When i got the camera i read:

A digital video camera may be connected to a computer using an optional OHCI compatible, digital video capture kit available commercially.
These kits must be capable of using the IEEE-1394 (firewire) interface to enable you to import digital video signal and still images into your computer.

So now im a bit confused. Would i just be able to buy a firewire wire(firewire cable) and attach it to my pc's firewire port and use like adobe premeir to transfer my videos or do i actually have to buy the capture kit. if buying the kit is what i should have done, then what is the purpose of my firewire on my mainboard?

I'm still green when it comes to DV, thanks for the help in advance.

buy the cable, plug it in, capture in premier. its cool. you can control the camera in playback mode, like ff & rw & pause.

just make sure you got lots of space to save all those video!

I'm playing with my new mini DV camcorder now and was wondering why it only captures realtime. I thought for sure it would transfer to the computer much faster. I'm using Pinnacle Expression capturing from JVC GRD-31US.

Oh and by the way, get a firewire cable from an online store and save yourself a ton of money. Best Buy charges $40 for a 6 ft cable; I paid $8 for at 10 ft 4-6 pin at http://www.cableconn.com/.

They have a $10 minimum order, but their shipping was free! It looks like they have pretty good prices too, I was very happy to get some much needed parts for my htpc along with the new firewire cable at rock bottom prices.
