A question about drinking on the job.

Hey all,
A situation has developed recently in the workplace and I would like your input. I have a new employee(three weeks) that has been doing very well and the customers seem to like her...today, she was more talkative than usual and couldn't seem to stay on task...she worked hard when she worked and never shied away from a customer or task...and I'm pretty sure she was drinking...I was busy all day and only had fleeting contact with her and once smelled a sweet/minty smell...Shnaaps(sic) perhaps...or breath mints? She maintained physical control well, at least what I saw of her, but I'm almost sure she was under the influence. My question; any suggestions on handling this? I have been doing this sh1t for twenty years now and have never had to deal with a drinker(on the job)...I've had my fair share of hangover/late to work, etc. and am fairly adept at sorting those issues out. Next to being unsure how to approach this situation, is that I am leaving to our National buying show a week from today and already do not have the staff to cover both stores as it is...If need be, I will let my business partner fend for himself at market, but there has to be a productive way to sort this out. If you made it this far, thanks and if you have insight to offer, THANKS.

Should probably have a chat with her and let her know that if it continues to be a problem, she's no longer welcome to work there.

edit: I'm assuming she was, in fact, drinking. But if you're fairly certain, than you should still talk to her. Atleast give her a chance to straighten out before it reaches the point to where you have to fire her.

I wouldn't do anything right away. Just wait to see if it happens again, or if it gets to the point where she's obviously drunk or can't do her job.

besides the smell (which is easily confused) what other indications are there that she is drinking?

Show up under the influence and you = fired. Sorry, but I have zero tolerance.

Tell her that you won't say anything about it this time, but you don't want to see similar behavior again.

Perhaps, but he's hardly certain of her drinking. Keep the bright line rules to yourself until they deserve to come out.

Definitely give her some time to evaluate her. She may have just not gotten enough sleep... I know that sometimes I'll drink heavily on a weeknight and still feel it the next day. Just see how it affects her job performance and be sure to document it. Also document everyone else's performance so she can't say you're singling her out.

this is true. also, sometimes being overtired can yield the same frenetic energy and lack of concentration power.
