A question about a gun

Background: I live in Tennessee, and I don't have a permit for a gun.

Last night my dad offered to give me a gun that belonged to my brother. I've seen it, but all I know about it is that it is some type of snub nosed revolver. My brother is deceased. I would like to make sure that everything about this transfer is 100% legal. What do I need to do? I am guessing that:

1. I will need to register the gun in my name (but with who?)
2. I will need a carry permit.

What else?

yes. I've been around/shot guns my whole life, but I've never had a permit or anything. In a way, I'm a complete gun noob. I would like to get a carry permit. Also, I have heard that there are interstate permits (or that other states would honor a TN carry permit).

packing.org will tell you what states will honor a TN CCW and vice versa.

You do not need a license to purchase a gun in TN, so he can just give it to you, no need to register it or anything.

According to the brady campaign your state has a grade of D+, which is not terrible. The closer to you to an F (for Fantastic) rating from them, the better the state is. :D

packing.org seems to be AWOL at times. Try http://www.handgunlaw.us/ for who will honor your CCW

I have been told you should register your firearm with the State Police; however when a firearm is inherited you do not have to. This is from a gun owner for life; however he couldn't find the specific law text that says this so try to find out from the police in TN.

It varies by state. Most states, allow for FTF or Face to Face sales or transfers of guns provided that both parties are residents of that state. Always check your local State and city laws before proceeding, but to the OP being in a southern State. Go get that gun boy.
