A proxy question

I have two computers and have set one of them up with Winproxy. At the moment I'm connecting with a 56k modem but I hope to have DSL and started working on keeping hackers out. I went to DSLreports and tried two of there port scaners and nither was in able to determind if there ws even a computer at my ip. While I know this is good, does it sound like I'm locked down enough from the outside world when I do get DSL?

Just make sure you dont have file/print sharing bound to the new ethernet card for the DSL.

Then you should be plenty safe (assuming you're not running any servers or anything, then it gets more complicated.)

RUSS you do get around don't you? 😀 If you keep showing all these great powers that you have, I might have to make you a god! 🙂 🙂

Anyways....

Shields up says that my port 139 doesn't seem to exist and it couldn't connect with netbios either. I'm doing the scan my ports part now. I'll let you know what is says....if it ever gets done.

Thanks for the help info.

[EDIT] It says that I'm in stealth mode and I like this comment so much, I'll paste it:

"for all intents and purposes your computer doesn't exist to scanners on the Internet"

Just a reminder than grc.com only checks some common ports. If you are using some software firewall like BlackICE or ZoneAlarm, there's a good chance that many of your other ports are still exposed to the Internet. Don't give yourself a false sense of security.

I am just offering a reminder, I don't know what you are running so I have no way of telling how secure you are. Better be safe than sorry later.

If you ran a port scanner on all possible ports and none were open, then I would say that you are fine 🙂 Just don't get overconfident and run a check every once in a while...

I don't know about blackice, but zonealarm won't work in this case. he's using a LAN, and zonealarm doesn't allow for that yet, I spent hours trying to figure out how to allow winproxy to access the web, then I read the read me file and realized why I couldn't get it to work. :|

it sounds like you should be good to go.

Yes, ZoneAlarm does not support NAT. But for proxy softwares that do not use NAT (eg. wingate), it does work. BlackICE works with NAT if you turn down the security a little, since it does not block outgoing traffic from unknown source.
