A proposal

Threads are wicked mad around these forums today, and with great reason, WERE GROWING. and GROWTH IS GREAT! now that I have that in caps yelling it at the top of my lungs for all to see that this is not a anti-growth thread, I would like to bring up an issue that I have had recently wile visiting the DC forums. and I love you guys so much, that I want to propose a solution to the problem.

when I visit this forum now adays I get BLASTED with welcome threads, stat threads, milestone threads, All these different wild and crazy threads that are exellent to have, but are beginning to overwelm other threads of new members asking questions, old members discussing there latest addition to their rack or other non essential pointless mindless threads about what we had for dinner. which is all wonderful.

my proposal so that I can see ray whomping on people with his cane, or virge sticking his little brother on "bite" mode on more members is to consolidate our Welcome, Daily stats, and Milestones for each project into a single post per project, in todays example I would like to use Seti. so instead of having a TON of welcome threads, stat threads and mile stones we have one, easy to search easy to find, thread covering all the topics at once,

since I belive that new members are probably most important they should get the top of the post below is a demo of what said post will look like to us the average joe. this shouldn't be to hard for one of the program types around here to conjure up a small script for an E-mail client (oh say linux) and assigned E-mail box (which I would be more then happy to supply) to send stats to and consolidate to a single post and post on the boards.

Check out IJump's excellent race prediction analysis.

The British Bulldogs Tag Team Tandem are rattling the charts this morning in two separate brackets. Loading up the wu cannon and firing 51 wu's towards the Berkeley wu receptacle, TeAm Confused Ai3x manages to take over the lead in the Team AnandTech SETI 500, handing ledzepp98 the keys to second place. In their other showdown with the Long Island Rocker, Another race to 6000, the team of confusion has whittled ledzepp's lead all the way down to a teeny tiny 17 workunits. This just shows to go you, don't take our British friends for granted. They have turned the old Dupe 'n Dump maneuver into an art form.

A quick look at DDad's Wonderful Tuff Crabby Ass(imilator) Race to 750 shows us that Why Yes YS is certainly alive and kicking as his major league 24 wu dump causes a stir throughout his bracket. Meanwhile, excitement is the word of the day in the Race to Crunch 1500 That I Can't Think Of A Name For. The remaining three crews on the track are waging quite a battle, with only 132 wu's separating first from third. The Migrooster continues to cruise arund the track, currently occupying the number three spot in the pecking order, but should Mighty Micron falter, that placement arrangement could change in a hurry. Speaking of excitement, take a look at the battle being waged for second in What's 2500 wu's Between Friends?. Overnight, lane42 charged up the wu gun and rattled off 73 mighty shots to vault into second place ahead of Yielder. Keeping the pressure on from the fourth spot, GreatWhiteNorth smokes 78 to tighten the gap between second and fourth to a measly 64. Some great racing going on here!

Not willing to give up without a fight, the Sinister Oscillator thrills the standing room only crowd taking in the action in The Star-Studded Stellar Cluster Crunch to 2500 by putting on an amazing display of dump muscle flexing, laying waste to 126 workunits to keep things close at the top. It may be wise for the racers vieing for the lead in this bracket to raise the blast shields, as rumor has it that Starfleet headquarters have given word that Admiral Engineer and the Federation may engage Transwarp AV at their discretion. All indicators point to that momentous event occurring sometime this week. With the USS Pazoo now past the half-way point in the Captain's Crunch to 3000, the USS Jaws and the USS Phiton are waging quite a battle for third place. Captain Phil is still having some problems with the Trans-Galactic drive, this time it's the trans-tabulation sublimation phase tracking ion filter on the left side proton pulsinator that's causing a slight disturbance in the warp field.

Advancements among racers on 7/28 include Tetsuo316 up 1 to 161, ReaganCRW up 2 to 228, Maggotry up 1 to 158, LiveLongAndProsper up 4 to 208, Crazee up 1 to 55, tuffguy up 1 to 94, Freewolf up 1 to 122, marrkks up 3 to 265, thawolfman up 20 to 591.

Narzy,

you da man. Does this mean that you are volunteering your time to gather all the relevant information and format it every day....??? (That's the big downfall I see to your proposal. It's going to require one person to gather all the info and make the post....)

if the persons who put the originating threads together would continue to gather said info that would be awsome, and E-mail it to eather a bot address or myself or even work together on a common ground or whatever, Im open to how to do this, I just want to get it done, if it means that I get all the info and throw it into a thread, I'm happy to do it.

Another problem with that idea is that Smokeballs welcome threads come at different times during the day(whenever a new person signs up!:D) - not just once a day, not to mention that he packs alot of good info for the noobies into those welcome posts too!:D

Just thought I'd toss my $.02 in to the jar.:)

Is there any way we can get the mods to create subcategories like at the offsite group? that would streamline things considerably.

Hehe.

Narzy, I think you have a very good idea there. Now, just getting everybody's co-operation will be the hard part, but if everyone is agreeable I think it should work out well. :)

Good idea...

Things are getting to the point that it feels like I'm cleaning out my junk email. (Post on MM, post on races, post on SETI Stats, etc..)

But I have to cure my hunger for stats, so what is the best solution?

I'm not entirely in favour of this ,I'm only on 56k dialup atm (so are many others) ,stacking all this info into 1 thread would mean it could take quite a while loadup ,especially with the slow non subscriber forums!
rolleye.gif
.
Sometimes I only have a short amount of time on here & all I want to do is check out HBs daily stats & OD's race stats ,I don't wanta plough through a load of other stuff;)

I do get your point though ,there are alot of the threads you mention which do push down other threads quickly ,maybe a compromise could be done?
For example Smokies welcome threads ,instead of adding a new thread for each new member(s) that are spotted at the time of posting ,maybe the welcome thread of that day could be edited to add the new members?:) ,that would save him some work too;).............maybe he already does that?

Getting everyone co-ordinated is going to be a problem though.............

I mentioned this to Smoke about a week ago, but he doesn't seem to be doing it! I think he's now putting 2 or 3 in one thread like when he gets up, but all new ones after that seem to come in seperate threads. I think he could just edit the original, but i agree that there are lots of threads for Seti especially pushing other projects down. Tho i think seperate threads for the smaller projects can only help them!

I agree with narzy's proposal. I'm on 56k too, and the load time is NOT an issue. The extra text pretty much equals one post/reply, which is still much quicker than loading mutliple threads to see all the posts.

In regard to welcoming the new members, we should just welcome the new members that joined the day before.

I highly agree with this. At minimum it would be appreciated if we consolidated the welcome threads. I think we can leave races, stats, and welcomes seperate though.
