A problem with my PC

Hey, as the summary says I have a slight (i hope) problem with my pc.

Randomly one afternoon my PC decided to crash, so i reset it, after of which, the PC would turn on (well the fan/lights were on) but the monitor, keyboard and mouse didnt.

I was told that chances are it would be a problem with my PSU, so I have RMA'd that, but upon browsing around some more, it looks like it could be a variety of things. So i was wondering if any of you could give me some help with this matter?

I would be willing to post any more info needed, here are some of the specs of my pc:

mobo:asus p5k-e
ram: corsair dominator (running 2 gigs atm, used to run 4 but had a problem with that ;x)
psu: corsair 650w
gfx: nvid 8800gtx

Thanks again.

Ok, cheers, well I have a spare mobo downstairs, so i will be trying that out later on, I just hope its not the GFX/RAM, well i do, but in terms of getting a quick replacement i dont lol, want it sorted for wotlk (ftw!)

When you say "the PC would turn on" do you mean to say that you could hear the PC pass POST and load the OS, or was it that just the fan spun and lights came on? The former with no video/keyboard/mouse is pretty rare, but the latter without those things pretty common.

The lights would be on and fan would be spinning, there are no beeps though, tbh i dont remember even when my PC was working i would hear a beep, but that could just be me 🙂

Another thing that happens, is when i press the reset button, the PC will turn off for 2 secs then come back on, something that never happens when you reset a PC. Also when I turned it on, it would take around 2 secs to turn on aswell.

Thanks again for the help, if u need to know anything else just ask, im no PC expert but i know a few things. My PSU should be back at my house within the next 2 days, still hope that its that that's causing this.

If its not the motherboard then its probably the video card. Best way to tell would be to connect a system speaker to the motherboard so you can hear any beep codes that some from the board. Those will tell you right away what the problem may be. If you don't have one then this kit may be what you'll need so that you do have a speaker on hand.

sorry im not that knowledgeable with PCs, but just to ask, are you sure it wont be the PSU? I know with PCs it can really be anything, but i just cant see how it would be the graphics card? Again thanks very much

The PSU is a top notch PSU with plenty of power to support the system. It can easily be the video card. Its not unheard of for a card to go bad after about 2 or 3 years of good use. It could be as simple as the card overheating or as bad as the card being dead. But you won't know till you get a speaker on the motherboard and get the beep codes.

ok, well ive only had the PC for around 4 months, but still, i would try this beep testing thing but i dont have a PSU ;x Guess have to wait, but just to know, what beep codes am i wanting to hear? And not wanting to hear? Thanks again 🙂
