More like a prime example of how today's republicans handle an issue: throw money at it.
... how today's republicans handle an issue: throw money at their rich contributors and tell the poor it will "trickle down" to them... someday... probably much later... if at all... while they pig out at the trough, enjoy a few more rounds of golf and laugh at all those peasants in need.

Fixed it for ya. 🙁

Watch out, you'll give them ideas. The last thing we need is trickle down disaster recovery. 😉

I only wish they hadn't included a photograph of the man with that article. Then Steeple would have to go back and delete every one of her posts to this thread.

Umm no. I posted about him being black before I saw the pic. If there was no pic of a black guy there would be no thread here and no outrage from the resident racist.
wtf are you talking about?

no one here cares if the guy is purple, green or pink polka-dot. the guy is a freeloader who used a gov't handout to buy booze and cigs, and he thinks he is entitled to more free cash to spend "just the way" he wants. 😕

FEMA sent him $9,000 in housing aid, but he spent it all on booze, cigarettes, some clothes, and food?partying, mostly. ?I spent my money just the way I wanted, and I think [FEMA] should send me some more,? he says. [/ b]

Like I said, point out the racism, or would like to back gen-lamer up on why MLK or even myself was/is racist becasue he brings up racism? And no, I have no interest in goosestepping with your little party of thugs. I use my head to much anyway, that is unpatriotic in their playbook.

What do you all have to say about this product of the American entitlement culture?

JFK's famous words, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country" come to mind.

How should the tax payers of NY handle this situation?

After being flown here for free back in September, Johnson?s been at the Holiday Inn since Super Bowl Sunday. On April 21, the hotel served Johnson with three notices of occupancy termination, saying that it would begin court proceedings if he wasn?t out by May 9. He wasn?t, so it did. If the court boots him, Johnson could end up in one of the city?s homeless shelters. He?s been broke for over a month now. FEMA sent him $9,000 in housing aid, but he spent it all on booze, cigarettes, some clothes, and food?partying, mostly. ?I spent my money just the way I wanted, and I think [FEMA] should send me some more,? he says. But it won?t. Johnson?s caseworker says FEMA offered to buy him a ticket home to New Orleans in February, but he didn?t take it. FEMA won?t now. So he?s stuck, at least until the Holiday Inn pays him to leave.

Just to clarify something, most "left-wingers" wouldn't support this guy either. It's right to think this guy is dispicable, but don't try to pass him off as representative as anyone who disagrees with neocon policies.
Though I'm sure many people, if given the chance, would abuse the system just like this guy, which is why a strong and well-defined legal system is necessary. The government should have as little intervention as possible, but since a system of anarchy doesn't work and the social welfare of a nation is still everyone's concern, a bit of government controlled socialism is necessary to make sure the idiots don't abuse what society provides for those are truly need it.

Anyhow, send this guy to jail, or just push him out onto the streets and let him suffer.

Yeah, that theory may have worked at one point in time, but considering that we're part of a very globalized economy, it makes much better business sense for it to "trickle down" to countries with cheaper operating costs, like China.

Not all Republicans are racist, but all racist are Republicans...

Hardly, and honestly who cares what people think of others? As long as they're not impeding on the rights of others(say...with a marriage ban), there's no problem, other than maybe their credibility is hurt.

Some people are just going to be retarded and throw away the help they get. No reason to stop helping people in need.

America's socialist policies do not apply here. Its the victims of uncontrollable causes or society's defenciencies that our social support provides. On this premise, individuals are offered aid to help offset their financial, personal, physical, emotional, disabilities for a short period of time so that they can get back onto their feet. If an individual chooses to use the funds in a irresponsible way, then they do not deserve any more. Many victims of Katrina are back onto their feet and making progress. This guy chooses not to.

Isn't Hawaii a Democrat voting state by a pretty large majority? I can't tell you how many "Go home whiteman" signs I've seen there, and chances are a good portion came from Democrats.

Just look at it as a "Tax cut", oh wait, this guy is poor and black, nm he deserves nothing, that damn leech. /sarcasm

Shoulda been born white and used it on cuban cigars and bribes. How DARE he!

Who cares what color his skin is. Just because this guy happens to be black does not make the OP a racist.

He spent his aid money on booze.... throw his butt to the curb. What mroe do you want the government to do for him?

Of course not, even though it somehow is always blacks pointed out first every time while corrupt whites are heros of the "free-market".

BTW, some mexican called, your hoods are done being drycleaned.

If you're going to spout racial stereotypes at least get them right. The Koreans run all the dry cleaners.

edit: Maybe he can get off the phone with an Indian call center, hail a cab with an Arab driver, Spit on the black guy begging for money on the curb, and walk past the Mexican mowing the lawn in front of the minimall where the Korean dry cleaner has finished cleaning his white hood.

I don't think the card carying members of the NAACP are Republicans, but most of them are racist. Have you ever listened to their speeches?

My dry cleaner are actually Haitians *shrug*

You on the west coast huh? Lots of Koreans in CA.

Enough with the sarcasm and back on topic.

The fact that this guy was given money in a time of need does not make him dispickable. What makes him a sack of human garbage is the attitude that after living it up for months in a free hotel and pissing all his money away he is somehow entitled to more. A agree with the majority of posters in here that race has nothing to do with it. His attitude would be deplorable whether he is black, white, hispanic, native American, Asian, or other.

I don't think that the individuals who take advantage of the handouts are nearly as disturbing as the corporations that do. In the Katrina example, I am much more disturbed that our government bailed out insurance carriers that did not have the dough to cover the prperty they had accepted money to insure. I think that the insurance companies should have been forced out of business and then the government should have paid out benefits to the citizens who were cheated by the fraudulent business that calls itself insurance. The executives of these companies should have been indicted like Enron and their owners should have been forced to work for a living (or at least start a more reputable business with any money that they had left after the insurance scam went belly up). Insurance companies invest money and should have enough to pay out even if all of their beneficiaries claim on the same day.

Actually, before moving to Japan I lived in Milwaukee. There were three Korean drycleaners within a mile of the store that I ran. I am not so ignorant to think that this is a theme that is uniform accross the nation, I was merely building on your sarcasm.

Unless they specifically were selling hurricane insurance, that's a rather unrealistic prospect. You don't have to be a big multinational corporation to be an insurance company.

Call the WAHmbulance. This thread is another "Prime Example" of an attempt to label an example of a bureaucratic screw up as some grand "Leftist Entitlement Culture" when all it is is a screw up by some bureaucrat who happens to be on the Bush administration's payroll.
No, No, No, No. You see, bureaucracy and govt. waste is perfectly acceptable when the Republicans do it.

WHile I think that the guy who blew $9000 on booze and partying is certainly an asshole, there are far worse problems out there.

Most importantly though, I don't think a sense of "entitlement" is particular to "leftists".

It brings to mind the most Republican/Conservative guys I do business with. They both had their business handed to them by dad, did absolutley squat to grow it, and remain rich on contacts and practices that they neither created nor really understand.

Yet both are the staunchest anti-welfare state, Rush-Limbaugh listening, vitriol spewing guys you'd want to meet. In a way, though, they had the biggest *handout* that you could think of, it just didn't come from the government.

The Republican vanguard of "pull yourself up by the bootstraps", create-your-own-reality is really, really rare. And the guys who *really* do it, who create wealth and opportunity out of nothing, the ones that I know are pretty evenly divided among political ideoligies.
