A portable 100GB solution?

I need to pick up something i can carry to work to retrieve my data/code from a file server at work. Im moving on to a new position, so this would be a one-time thing. My main directory is 74GB, plus other stuff i need to grab. Im currently attempting to gz to the local drive on my machine. Any suggestions or worries? This is 4.5 years worth of code so i would like to make sure that i can get it before they "lock me out." TIA.

I like this idea. I could stick an SSD in there. I have 4 or 5 internal drives laying around, but most are used for backup or backup of backups using an external eSata cradle. I have not spent any time looking at SSDs, but im pretty sure that they all "slim/notebook" size, no? Oddly, i have a similar portable drive, but its a 20GB notebook drive that i have not used in many years and forgot about it until this exchange (its too small though, obviously).

Any standard 2.5 SATA will fit/work. Some SSDs come in 1.8", and even 3.5, but 2.5 is common.

You could buy a Vertex 2 for a little over $200, and when you are done with your little project, you could use the drive as your OS drive in your main rig.

That is a possibility, yes. My rig is already stuffed with 5 3.5s (4 in RAID0+1 and 1 for movies), but since these guys are small there is certainly a bay open for dual boot potential. When is Win8 coming out? My next build is definitely going to be SSDs though. I guess im off to Hot Deals to look for an SSD.

Im still open to more "interesting" solutions to my problem though...

Hmm... something seems sinister here.

When you say 'new position' are you still with the same company? If so, just tell them to continue to give you access to your file server files. Otherwise, if you are leaving bemindful of what you copy, but I won't even bother to get further into that.

You can spend money for a 2.5" USB external drive or if you have one, put your 3.5" HDD into a 3.5" external USB HDD docking or just the adapter and power supply. Take that with you to work and copy away.

I own 3 of these, yes they are cheap flimsy and defiantly made in china.

They have also survived for 3 years of use, one gets used multiple times a week and still works fine and has had 5 different drives in it over the years.

No. Nothing sinister. Im a scientist at a non-profit/academic institute (grants and gifts are our only source of funding, thus, everything is public). The code i need is my personal working directory. Its 4.5 years of mess with many, many projects and one-off code/scripts. This same directory has sub directories from grad school and postdocs which i brought with me.

On my problem, i 7zipped the whole thing down to 29GB. Im thinking a big flash drive is now needed. That 120 GB drive is a great deal, but i think i would get more use out of a big flash or SSD. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Don't forget that if you go with a big honking flash drive that it's not going to be fast.... an SSD would be instantaneous in comparison but it would still take a few minutes to copy that much data.

Put it on the web then if its public. there's many free sites -heck windows live is 25gb now. split it up and par2 for prosperity .

make sure they have a firm understanding of what you are doing in case they believe they own any of the work derived from grants/funds.
