A point about Vista

Just something to keep in mind

Alot of people are worried that systems we buy now are going to be obsolete once Vista comes out (not be able to handle its graphical enchancements).

But I think we may all be drowning in our own microcosm of people who like to upgrade their computer every 6 months. We make up a very small percentage of the consumer market - most people do not upgrade like we do, and also do not keep their systems at bleeding edge potential.

If microsoft made it so a 9700pro couldn't handle Aero Glass (the highest ui setting) they would lose a large chunk of business.

So personally I'm feeling that now is a great time to upgrade - get a system now, let vista and AM2 stew for a while, and in 10 months maybe get a new graphics card, but I really think an X2 system is going to last well into the Vista world. Then later you can upgrade to AM2 maybe but by then things won't be premium price anymore. you win all around.

If you want to wait for the 7900 thats another story, but I wouldn't wait for Vista.

Although the whole HDCP debacle is another story if you care about watching HD movies...

Or upgrade to Intels new architecture instead of M2 later. Its nice to know somone else thinks that waiting for vista is daft, comforting too as i just impulse bought 2x dual core opterons and a X1900XT.... im so poor 🙁

I'm still trying to decide on whether to upgrade to Vista when it comes out. I guess when I see all my friends running it, the OS might look a bit more appealing.

vista shista. its just graphical bloat thats all. and if oyu want cool desktop graphiocs check novells (linux) new desktop,, and 3d desktop in linux.. thats 10 times better than aero glass.

only time i'll upgrade is when good games stop supporting win xp and not a moment sooner

Yes... all my friends made fun of me ad disowned me because i was still on windows millenium and they had windows XP 🙁 j/k

What do you think the initial price of Vista will be? XP Pro full version is around $275 retail, so I imagine Vista will be in the $300 range as well.
And it doesn't sound as though it is yet finished at all according to PC World and PC Magazine, they had articles about the latest betas and there was still a lot to be finalized in the graphics.
I can imagine the hardware drivers and codecs will be a real issue for the first year.
Maybe XP with Google addons will suffice for a couple more years. 🙂

You won't see Vista on the shelves for quite awhile. When was the last time that an MS OS was done on time 😉

Keep in mind that the pretty new UI is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the graphics rendering system in Vista. What would make Vista a worthwhile upgrade for me is an upgrade for Photoshop and Illustrator that is able to make use of the Windows Presentation Foundation (the part of the OS that makes all the spiffy Aero graphics possible) in order to pass off filters and vector operations over to the graphics card for acceleration. For content creators, it'll be the equivalent to the transition from software 3D rendering to hardware acceleration with OGL and DX in the gaming world.

If the software vendors take full advantage of what WPF can do, then you will at some point see a huge speed improvement in content creation apps under Vista. If you've ever had the fun of waiting for a really detailed vector image to update in Illustrator or Freehand while your processor chugs away at redrawing all the vector objects, you'll run to the store to get Vista and Illustrator CS3/4 if you suddenly have the option to throw your graphics card's power at the job. Even a low-end X300 would make a difference if all of its graphics hardware could be harnessed for 2D work.

Of course it is up to the software vendors to actually start using these features, and to do that it'll require a major rewrite of their code, which I'm sure won't be an easy task for a company like Adobe which has a LOT of legacy Photoshop and Illustrator code that would need to be updated. Apple already has support for a similar technology called Core Image in their current OS but I've seen few apps besides the Apple-published Motion and Final Cut take advantage of what it can do. If we see the same sort of thing in the Windows world, we could have quite a wait before we see a lot of Vista-specific updates to the most of the content creation apps.

I'd made fun of you for running Windows ME too 😛

Some of the 3D desktop features of Vista are kinda interesting actually... was looking at this today.

I wouldn't bother upgrading just yet. Anything above an X300 seems to handle it just fine. But if you don't want to move on, i'd wait until DX10 cards come out... then you know you're buying into the future a little more.
