When I "retire" an old HD I wipe it and then BBQ it on a fire. It's interesting to watch the solder melt and pool as the drive bakes.

OP, I concur with your amazement as to people's lack of common sense when protecting their privacy. Heck, you don't have to go far to see how much personal information is "shared" on the 'Net ... just check through ATOT to find a good amount of private information that (for whatever reason) people feel compelled to post.

Just imagine if someone less kind had found the drive ... and used that information against the previous owner ... or worse, posted it all on the Internet.

Hopefully you didn't put that on your grill.

Oh come on ... the lead and toxic chemicals leached from the HD add a fantastic flavor to what I cook later.

In reality I actually have done this before. My Dad died in 2003 and I was his executor. While cleaning out his house I had to go through all his old files and paperwork. While I had to save a few boxes of papers most went up-in-flames on his old grill (luckily the tank had a lot of propane left in it). Boy did that stuff burn hot ... perfect for roasting old HDs.

The grill went out in the trash when it had served it's purpose.
