When I "retire" an old HD I wipe it and then BBQ it on a fire. It's interesting to watch the solder melt and pool as the drive bakes.
OP, I concur with your amazement as to people's lack of common sense when protecting their privacy. Heck, you don't have to go far to see how much personal information is "shared" on the 'Net ... just check through ATOT to find a good amount of private information that (for whatever reason) people feel compelled to post.
Just imagine if someone less kind had found the drive ... and used that information against the previous owner ... or worse, posted it all on the Internet.
