A P4 Northwood price drop anytime soon????

I was just wondering if anybody knew if p4's were going to drop in price anytime soon?? Is there any new p4's coming out soon that are going to make the price of the current one's drop at all? I'm just curious b/c I'm about to buy a p4 and don't want to have them go down within 2-3 weeks of me buying it. I realize they will go down eventually, but any idea as to when? Thanks.

Now's as good a time to buy as any. There's nothing that I'm aware of that would drop the prices on the current range of P4's other than the upcoming 2.8Ghz model. That probably won't be out until the end of the third quarter though and even so it won't reduce prices all that much. Jump in the water...

Only when the fastest comes out, will the mid-range drop a little. As for the last stock of 1.6 and 1.8, you won't see them drop anytime soon, as distributors and vendors know how popular they are.

Yep that's pretty much plain fact. And remember, Intel only dose the price drops when AMD is breathing down their throat which they are not doing anymore so I wouldn't count on very big price drops anytime soon.

I just bought a 2.26GHZ Northwood and I don't give a damn if a month from now I could get it for 20 bucks less. That month of using such a sweet CPU is worth more than 20 bucks to me. I recommend you buy the CPU now. the only reason to wait would be for Intel AGP 8x mobo's with DDR400 but that's not really too great of a reason. If those prove worthwhile, you'll be able to pick one up cheap in a year...

I bought my 1.6a at newegg.com in April for $130 + shipping.

Now the same proc at newegg.com is $155 + shipping.

Now thats stupid. Intel's flagship line of procs (Pentium 2/3/4) has traditionally never dropped below the $100 mark unless it was REALLY out of date.

Well if that isn't completely wrong, then I don't know what is.

1) Before AMD had any good product, Intel dropped prices regularly - every 3 months or so. Without any good competition the prices kept falling.
2) Intel releases approximate price information roughly 6 months in advance. Thus it doesn't really know what AMD will have in store for them that far in the future.
3) Intel has consistantly dropped their high end line prices roughly every 3 months (and on occasion when a new top end processor is released). Their typical schedule is end of January, April, July, October. They often vary the exact date by a month or so - these aren't set in stone. But if you really need to know, the dates are posted here. See the 4th link down, it discusses the pricing roadmap. Of course you need to pay a fee and prove you are a reseller to see that roadmap. However as the date nears, Intel lists on that page the exact date (roughly 2 weeks ahead). You can see that no date is listed here so nothing is planned in the next 2 weeks. And since you aren't a reseller you cannot see the actual upcoming prices - however you do get to see the date.
