emerge sync simply downloads about 40,000 small scripts that can be used to download and compile just about any program ever written for Linux; all of these are downloaded, whether you plan to use them or not. Once that is done, then I must download the sourcecode for GCC and other stuff (40MB worth), then the kernel (20MB) then a bunch of other misc. crap (probably over 100MB).
