Single embryo created from three parents
February 05, 2008 10:26pm
Article from: AAP

SCIENTISTS have for the first time created human embryos using DNA from three separate parents.

DNA from one man and two women was used to create 10 embryos in groundbreaking research which could lead to the birth of the first genetically altered babies in Britain.

Scientists from Newcastle University in England told The Daily Telegraph newspaper their research could open up new methods for treating serious genetic conditions such as epilepsy and muscular dystrophy.

It also could help doctors ensure mothers did not pass on any genetic defects to their unborn babies.

The research was developed to help women with diseases of the mitochondrion, which are responsible for creating energy within individual cells.

Problems within mitochondrial DNA can lead to a range of potentially fatal conditions including liver failure, stroke-like episodes and diabetes.

The researchers believe the conditions could be eradicated by giving newly conceived embryos a "mitochondria transplant".

But the research has sparked fears that it could lead to the creation of so-called designer babies.

You know Mosh, not to bash because I like how you stimulate discussion, but I searched for your posts once to see if you rant like a lot of other ATOT'ers...and you really just post a lot of articles. =p

On Topic: Sounds neat, can they implant the embryo?

How does that work?

The article is way to vague to be sure, but I suspect they take a conventionally fertilized egg, then transplant some mitochondria from a third donor. That's a lot easier than trying to get a viable egg from three sets of chromosomes.

Can they use this technology to make a hybrid of Chuck Norris, Vin Diesel, and Bruce Lee?

Drop Vin Diesel and add Bob Sanders and you've got a real world dominator.
