I have had Bell Atlantic DSL and now Optimum Online and I will notice on occasion that I suddenly try to open my WEB Browser or Launch my email program ( Outlook Express ) that I will just not be able to connect. This happens on occasion but not often...Perhaps once every couple days or so. In the past, I would simply reboot my system and it would re establish my connection with no problems but I was still in search of finding out why this randomly happens!....I am currently running Win98SE. So accidently one night I noticed that after I couldn't get online with my web browser only a few minutes after i just closed a live a full working connection...I was puzzled and mad at the same time. So for the hell of it, I clicked on CTRL-ALT-DELETE and noticed what was running....I saw all the normal things like Explorer..SysTray...ect but then I noticed NOTEPAD??....I was wondering why notepad was running in this screen but wasn't anywhere to be found on my desktop, startbar or in my system tray. So I quickly END TASKED on it to my surprise it responded with a NOT RESPONDING message and gave me the option of WAIT or CLOSE...SO I chose close and made sure it still wasn't running by doing a CTRL-ALT-DELETE again....Right after ending the task of the NOTEPAD I RELAUNCHED my WEB BROWSER and my EMAIL PROGRAM...THEY BOTH WORKED FINE!!!

I have 2 PC's hooked up on my LYNKSYS BSFER41 CABLE/DSL 10/100 ROUTER HUB and I occasionally have this problem on both my machines from time to time and have found that this WORKS every time now to correct the problem!!

Please Experts....tell me what is going on...and why this works?..IF YOU DARE! <g>

I also suggest that you install WinTop it's much better that ctrl-alt-del, gives you lots of details about the processes and still lets you kill things.

Have you checked msconfig to see what's running at startup?

My connection gets nailed all the time from Half-Life, either Counter-Strike or Day of Defeat (mods). Have to reboot. 🙁
 
the QAZ trojan infects and uses NOTEPAD.EXE to connect remotely and act as a server. Follow Adul's suggestion and get 'the Cleaner'. You should also use 'ZoneAlarm'to block unauthorized connections both in and out of your box.
 
OT:

DarkFudge2000, how is that cable router of yours?? I'm thinking of getting one...does it
work fine, did you have any problems setting it up ??



 
somthing like that happened to me, a few times, a restart would fix it, now though, its off 24/7 (my cable) should i do a check for trojies too? no matter how many times i restart, or swich network cards i can't use anything, email icq, nuthin, haven't tried a format, and os reinstall, but that's tempting, this is a seprate system, servering the house. .. don't have a recent ghost image though... but sounds worth trying/looking into.
 
Can someone please recommend a FREE VIRUS REMOVING PROGRAM that will get rid of this Notepad disconnecting my Internet problem???

Also If I eventually let a Virus program start up automatically with my system, does it slow down my performance and use valuable resources??

ThornC....the Linksys BEFRS41 Router Sucks....plain and simple. it's fine for just splitting your cable or DSL connection into all your PCS and for basic LAN chores but I really only bought it to assist in Routing my UNREAL TOURNAMENT Server on the NET. It horribly corrupts packets and throws people off or freezes them making it totally unplayable. I have also read that the Linksys router has similar problems running Quake 3 and Half-Life servers as well......I finally gave up with firmware updates and just threw down cash to buy the NETGEAR 314 Cable 10/100 Router Hub which is getting rave reviews right now all over and Amazon is running a blowout price with free shipping of $109 delivered.....it was a deal I couldn't resist...So I went for it...It's actually arriving today or tommorow so I can let you know what I think.
 
I just had the sme thing. It's a virus, all right. It renames NOTEPAD.EXE to NOTE.COM and then installs itself as notepad.exe and does it's thing. My McAfee wouldn't clean it or delete it so I had to physically delete the file and rename note.com back to notepad.exe.

Then I used msconfig to uncheck that startup line that starts IE with notepad.exe and the virus file. I'll get around to editing the whole thing shortly.

My bad for getting sloppy. Now it's back to ZoneAlarm which I blamed for making my bootup and shutdown weird. It was actually the virus. However.... I got two more instances of 'network.vbs' virus AFTER I had brought Zone Alarm and McAfee WebScan back at startup. I am confused.

How in the world did you discover that whole Note.com and stuff thing out???...i would never know to even look for that stuff!!?


Also, what other steps need to be done to get rid of this ugly little virus other than:

Delete notepad.exe
Rename NOTE.COM back to NOTEPAD.EXE
remove Start IE Explorer with Notepad from STARTUP in MSCONFIG

what other steps need to be doe to fix this???

Also I notice that it doesnt happen all the time but just occasionaly....why?
