A moment of silence, please, for the /system directory.

/system used to be the most dreaded of system directories back in the early days of Windows.

What is it now? A mere legacy directory from the glory days, while the new king, /system32, reigns supreme.

O /system, take heart in this: The mighty /system32 will one day get its comeuppance as well.

The big question is, why isn't there a system64 folder in 64-bit Windows?

They should start using a directory named "SystemV" in Vista. It could be considered the 5th popular "consumer" Windows version kind of. Win3.x, Win95, Win98, XP, Vista. Or System7 if you add in 98SE and Win2k (which was kind of consumerish in that it was easier to use and more compatible than NT).

I think we should change to every file being in the root directory, with no subdirectories. File system writing ought to be easier that way, and applications don't really care about folders. And if we followed Microsoft's desires, users would never be allowed to see actual folders either, they'd only see the exact files of the exact formats that Microsoft believes an application should see. MS and other application writers also believe heavily in "album" type usage, where you don't even see a file name, you only see a link to files with a description of some sort, grouped into albums by the application.
