I was just watching ESPN............Mark McGwire has announced his retirement.

Now that Ripken is gone, and McGwire has followed, I no longer care to watch major league baseball. I consider McGwire to be the last of the "Class Acts" that played the game. Baseball will never be the same. :(

Im sure many of you will disagree, and will probably flame, but to tell the truth, I really don't care.

Ripken, I agree. McGwire, not so much.
But heck, my baseball world revolves around Barry Bonds, so I suppose I shouldn't talk. Considering all the haters around here.

That is pretty sad, I dont consider Mark a "class act" but he was a great ball player. He was one of my favorites back in the day of the Bash Brothers!

Mmm...so what do you have to say for McGwire's career? He come in with a bunch of noise won a title and got 70 home runs in a year...

McGwire not a class act? He declined a 30 million dollar contract because he didn't feel he could perform to the level of the money and wanted the organization to be able to sign better free agents.

It will be interesting to see what negative impact Bonds will have on baseball not that he is a free agent coming of a humongous year.

its sad to see such great men leave the sport, but there are others out there who are just as true baseball players as these two. If you want to see more class acts just look at John Franco or Mike Piazza...i know they are both mets, but they are jsut the two that come to mind right away...both have worked their asses off to get to where tehy are and neither will ever take a day of playing baseball for granted...

baseball always attracts some of the finest men.

Actually, it's mainly the Mets that do the attracting. :) Their team is always full of no names, who hustle like Rose and don't say a bad word to the media(for the most part).
There's something about that team. I like em.

Class act? Please. This egomaniac said he would have been right there with Barry Bonds if he was healthy, and basically didn't give him any credit for his amazing year. But he is no doubt an amazing baseball player, and will be missed. On the bright side, it sounds like Giambi will be going to the Cards now, and won't be in pinstripes next year, thank god.

It should be an amazing induction in Cooperstown in a few years, Tony, Cal Jr., and Big Mac.

Thank you

Among missing such a stand-up person, baseball will miss the greatest home run hitter of all time. Argue if you like, you will be wrong. Ruth is the only one who comes close. Not only did McGwire hit them with amazing frequency, but they were collosal. He was iconic. A giant among men. He will be missed

Oh come on, Piazza, could you pick a bigger cry baby, egotistical jerk? Franco, I agree, classy guy and a real New Yorker. If you want to list classy Mets, you got to include Al Leiter, classy guy and a great pitcher, as long as he's not pitching to Luis Sojo. ;) (sorry, couldn't resist) Both of them are classy guys, not Piazza. Come on, how many players call a press conference for the sole reason of crying like a little bitch? And lets not forget the fact that he refuses to move from behind the plate just so he can set all-time catcher records. Real Classy.

A sad day indeed... and as for not being a class act, sure the guy had some low points early on in his career, but what other player gives up $30 million the team basically owes him and recruits another player to take his place? He's as decent as they come.

And to see how he interacted with my home town of St. Louis... there was never a good man in baseball if not Mark McGwire. He will be missed, but always remembered... Hell, St. Louis still goes apesh*t if Willie McGee's name is mentioned and besides not being terribly good or consistent, he's living in California.

A moment of Silence please......Baseball has just died

Yes, it already did. The owners have voted to cut two teams out. There will be a strike. Maybe they'll collectively lock out the free agents like they did before. That was kind of cool!

Nah, no lockout this year, owners already said they wouldn't do it. We won't be seeing any major work stopage, if any stopage at all this year. The all-star game is at the brewers new stadium, and Bud "I can't open my mouth without making an ass out of myself" Selig will make sure that game gets played.

He was only 17 home runs away from 600. Sorry to see him go. :(

Regardless of whether you think he's a "class act" or not, it's still a big loss to the city of St. Louis and the game of baseball.
