a minimum wage poll for ATOTers

we will all be affected, it will slow down the economy

minimum wage laws are anti-free enterprise

http://www.house.gov/jec/cost-gov/regs/minimum/against/against.htm

Economists have studied the job-destroying features of a higher minimum wage. Estimates of the job losses of raising the minimum wage from $4.25 to $5.15 have ranged from 625,000 to 100,000 lost jobs. It is important to recognize that the jobs lost are mainly entry-level jobs. By destroying entry-level jobs, a higher minimum wage harms the lifetime earnings prospects of low-skilled workers.

I hear 80% of Americans are in favor of increasing the minimum wage. I guess it sounds like a good idea - if you don't put any thought into it.

 minimum wage increases.

Edit: I've never made minimum wage, and the only times I've made within $2 of minimum wage were when I was in high school and completely supported by my parents or in college and partially supported by my parents.

I can't vote in your poll. I don't know anyone who would be affected. I know of people, but I don't know them personally.

when i was in high school i worked for minimum wage, but that didn't last long because they gave me successive raises over the course of working there.

Probably cause thats really not an option? Every person in the US will be affected whether they know it or not.

My State's minimum wage has always been higher than the National one. I can't say that I see any difference when it increases.

you guys that have only gotten 2-3% raises the past few years, if your company has to pay more to the entry level workers, you think this year you'll get more than 2-3%?
nope, your extra 1-2% is going to pay for those snot nose kids "raise"

thanks socialists!!!

That is true, but not in the ways the poll options indicate. I would be affected by higher prices, not because I know someone who makes less than $10 or employs people who make less than $10.

I'm assuming most of the raise the minimum wage people are in the same camp that says the gov't has no right to tell a private business to ban smoking?

good idea.

FoBoT: part of the point of this exercise is to see if anyone is actually in that range. if no one is, no one is affected, directly or indirectly. and if very few people are, then the magnitude of the overall effect might be very low. when grocery sackers are making $8.25 to start, who cares if the minimum is $7.25?

only person i know that will be effected is my SIL who works at a local resturant.

last time i worked within $2 of min wage was back in highschool/college. might be wrong on the college one actually. really can't remember since it was years ago heh.

Reading comprehension. The context of the question is that "being affected" means you would get a raise from an increase in the min wage. Not that in no way would this affect you (or anyone) else.

I wouldn't be affected directly since my wage is well above minimum wage. I don't know anyone that would be affected by the change. In high school, I worked one job that was just above minimum wage.

I worked for minimum wage while I was living under my parents roof and when I went away to college. Do I get two votes?

I don't get raises at my current job, not even 2-3%. And I make $14/hour so this will really affect me.

Here's a way to look at it.

Making french fries isn't very difficult. The truth is that this position isn't worth 5.25/hour. Whoever does it is lucky to get paid that much.

I'm aware you can't live off 5.25 but lets say you can make fries, maybe you can learn how to take people's orders and get a raise to 6/hr. Maybe then you can learn some people skills / responsibily and start working at best buy for 7/hr. Then maybe you can become supervisor and make 12/hr.

OR you can get a free raise to 7.25/hr even though you aren't worth 4/hr...

Every industry that has to up the wages if going to raise prices. What happens? Everyone who makes more than 7.25 end up paying higher prices, which really means you get a pay reduction.

Everyone who makes more than that should get a raise too.

My moronic local newspaper is 100% on board with the idea of raising minimum wage to $10. Splashing kids' faces on the cover and generally doing the whole, "WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!" act. Makes me want to walk over there (they're a half block from my office) and burn the place down. 😛

Haha, here, check out the front page of the aforementioned paper.

That is a crock!
Let's not just look at what happens in the first thirty days, but look at the economy one year later: Everyone will eventually prosper!
More money to the less fortunate leads to more spending by them, which leads to more goods & services in demand, which leads to more jobs to manufacture & accomodate those goods & services.
The only ones who actually "suffer" are the wealthy, who aren't going to be spending any more or any less money either way!

How much would you be making right now if the Minimum wage was still $3.15 Hr., as it would be if the Republican party had it's way? (Or $1.35 Hr.as it was when I entered the workforce!)
