Unless the price drops signifigantly, this just sounds like another rape job for AGP holdouts to me.

Makes more sense to compare apples to apples, no?

Your missing the fact that the AGP X850XT can be had at Microcenter for $250 , plus a $50 rebate, which brings it to $200.

On another note, buying a $350 AGP card (which I don't recommend, X850XT FTW!) is still less on the pocket and less hassle than buying , mobo, CPU, VC and possibly RAM (depending on what you have).

$350 7800GS AGP

or

MOBO $70
CPU- AMD 3200+ $160
VC- 7800GT $280 = $510

If you get a PCIe 6800GS you drop $80 but it makes it more of a sidegrade than an upgrade. So if you go PCIe 6800GS (and all the PCIe upgrade parts) to get the price closer to an AGP 7800GS, you are better off getting an AGP 6800GS for $230 other than spending upwards of $430 for a sidegrade.

Do you PCIe people understand now?

not anymore....

That's true, Altho I thought the price was going to stay that way til Jan.31. (thats what I heard anyways).

I still think ATI will come forth with a new AGP card. There is too much "I'm better than you" stuff going on between ATI/nVIDIA. But I guess the question is when?

I still think it's better for someone like me (and there are many) to buy an AGP 6800GS. Then to go through all that pulling out/installing/selling to come out anywhere close to buying just a single card.

Selling a card slower than $280 7800GT for higher MSRP to AGP crowd is not what the AGP consumer wants.

You can just get $100 DFI 939 Infiniti board and $269 7800GT PCIe. It costs a bit more but you have PCIe upgrade path, 64-bit support, dual-core upgrade path. I am sure AXP3000+ and P4 3.0ghz with mobos can be sold for $75 used. This even eases the upgrade path for AGP users.

This card should have been released 6 months to a year ago for AGP crowd along 7800GT and GTX for PCIe. But apparently management at Nvidia have never taken a strategy course....

and you've never taken a history course....a year ago the top card was 6800 ultra which was selling for $500, so maybe you'd like to rewrite history and create a card which is faster then the fastest card available at the time at half the price. Yeah that would be reall nice of them....to undercut their own 6800GT with something which is a lot faster and cheaper. Great business strategy, maybe you should be the next CEO

No problem. :D

If anyone else here has gotten ahold of a GeForce 7800 GS AGP, feel free to post some numbers; it would be nice to compare my results with others.

If the pic of the card can tell you anything (im not sure if this holds true), I count 16 lanes on the PCB :( . Does that mean that you cannot unlock to 20?

That would make sence to me, but for our sake.....I hope it means nothing at all.

The card looks very awkard. I mean VERY awkard ine terms of where the GPU is, where the power transistors are etc.

Ummm....In July I believe of 2005, 7800GT and GTX 256mb cards came out at $399 and $499 respectively. Nvidia could have simply introduced 7800GS 16 pipe AGP card and priced it at $349. At the time 6800GT boarsd are about $280-300. So what was wrong with a $349 7800GS AGP card 6 months ago? 6800GTs were being phased out anyways. The point is, given that AGP is a niche market for high end gamers if you can even call them that, having top of the line 7800GS card in AGP would have taken sails away from all the X800XT and X850XT series of cards.

Also PC Surgeon I am in a similar position. I got Northwood 2.6 @ 3.2ghz and 2x512mb ram and Radeon 8500. Your system only has 512mb of ram and 2x256 which is even worse. Future games will utilize 2 gigs. Even if you upgrade to 1 gig you'll lose dual channel; which means you'll probably buy 2x512 (which means you are spending $100 towards DDR1). Your PSU might not even handle top of the line card. With dependency on 2 gigs of ram, hopefully wide support for dual cores at the end of 2006, DDR2 ram becoming standard once AM2 comes out, I would say you'd be better off selling what you can and either get S939 now or sell it when AM2 comes out. A better option could be getting Xbox360 for now since it wont be anytime soon when a $399 PC will be able to play COD2 at 60 frames (or any AGP card for that matter). 7800GS will be almost 1 year old tech when it comes out in Feb. But if you'll just use it to extend your rig's life for another 8-12 months, I can see your point. Still as an AGP owner, I am not happy paying $349 for a 16 pipe 7800 solution when 20 pipe 7800GTs cost $270 and a refurbished X1800XT is $399 on Newegg.

a pixel pipe is a on chip set of transistors, not some pcb lead.

This is great news to those who have perfectly functioning AGP systems. I was planning on waiting but became so impatient that I decided to go the A64/PCI-E route.

Any news on power requirements? The gt is fairly low iirc so this should be too. I think i'm running a 300W and it damn well better be enough :)

According to the minimum requirements on the BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC box, BFG recommends at least a 400W power supply (with 12V rated at 20A or more).
