I stayed home from work today and will be quitting my job soon, so I thought I'd take the time to give a message, from your friendly internet repair representative:

The company I work for provides a modem with an internet connection in your home. If your 6-year-old Dell has a crappy NIC, do not yell at me. If you are trying to use a wireless router through 3 stories of your house and it doesn't work, don't yell at me. If you try to use a wireless router period and it fails, don't yell at me. We make sure the settings are correct on your computer and that your modem is online, anything beyond that is either your own home networking issue or your crappy computer's fault.

Grandma, I love you, but if you don't even know where th address bar is, don't go to any site besides the ISP-built news/entertainment one, and even have trouble navigating through the simplest parts of that, then I really don't understand why you're blowing $50/month of your child's inheritence on our service. I will gladly help you but it just doesn't make sense to me.

If a storm comes through and your service goes out, you do not get a technician out there within an hour. At 8pm, no matter how angry you are, you do not get a technician out there within five minutes. We would gladly provide that quality of service if you would gladly pay an extra $300/month for service, as that is what we would have to jack our prices up to if we were to hire that many technicians.

Sorry its been a bad day and I needed to bitch about something.

I feel bad every time someone asks that question, because it's true they are getting screwed. The market demands high download speeds so tough luck.

Nevermind I thought you were talking about the uneven upload/download speed ratio

What's your name? Let me speak to your supervisor.

The internet is broken. This page I used to go to...I don't remember the phone number...isn't there. It's your fault. I want $10 taken off my bill for my inconvenience.

😛

ps
Be happy grandma is actually USING a computer. My mother (who is probably older than your grandma) refuses to use one. I offered to buy her one and show her how to use it. No dice. I offered again when her first grandchild was born and I wanted to email her tons of pics. No dice. At least granny is trying. You bastard. 😉

Ah, I needed to talk to an internet repair rep today. You are just the man for me.

Next door work neighbor comes in last night and asks for me. He knows that I know a little bit about computers. He says his internet isn't working. I say I can fix most problems but I absolutely cannot and will not fix internet problems (it is just trial and error checking/unchecking every box until it works). He insists. I say I cannot fix it. I do not have the ability, the education, nor the desire. He insists. Arguments ensue for 30 minutes, and I still say I won't fix it. I eventually leave and he says he'll come back tonight. How do I get him off my back?

Description of problem:
[*]Internet doesn't work.
[*]I ask why. He doesn't know.
[*]I ask what messages appear. He doesn't know.
[*]I ask if the modem can dial up. He doesn't know.
[*]I ask what happened when it stopped working. He doesn't know.
[*]He switched from NetZero (who couldn't help the problem) to PeoplePC and still cannot get online.
[*]He hired professionals who couldn't find the problem.

[sarcasm]That should be enough for you to solve this.[/sarcasm] Thanks.

How much is a DSLAM and how much is the high speed link on your end? How much is spent providing crappy modems and answering idiotic questions? I wish I had a service that did neither of the latter - my guess is it would be much cheaper.

I worked for Time Warner Cable (contracted) in Manhattan for 5 years. I will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER do that line of work again.

The only thing I miss were the consistent $20 dollar tips. I must have made at least $200-250 a week in tips before September 11 bullsh!t. Other than that, I hated the job, the people and the daily Manhattan traffic. Only thing that was good was the money, too bad my company closed. 🙁

Dial-up problem? *head explodes*
DSL problem for me that I cannot fix and Alltel/Windstream cannot fix. Nothing ever loads the first time. So it is refresh for every page, every time. But if I do it twice, I get a double post. But that isn't important to this thread.

What an asshole. Tell him you'll do it for $50 an hour, or just answer the door holding a machete and wait for him to leave.

i had VZ dsl for 2 years at 1.5mbps, got off for a few months, came back, and signed up for the 1.5mbps package but got capped at 768kbps. why did you tell me that that was all the speed the physical line could handle because of my CO location when in fact it was clearly untrue?

The main thing I don't understand about some people who call is that if their TV was broken, would they expect their cable to work? What is so different about their computer?

Heh, I just had the cable internet guy come over and hook my stuff up. He was pretty cool. He even offered to give me a NIC because my stupid on board was broken. I passed, but it was a nice thought.

He got here right on time, too. 8am.
