A message in a bottle that washed up 108 years later officially confirmed as world's

The postcard inside asked for it to be sent to the Marine Biological Association of the UK - promising the sender a shilling if they returned the bottle.

I hope they can collect interest on that shilling

1906 shilling in decent shape is around $150.-

Shilling in 1906 was worth around 25 cents U.S.

25 cents U.S. x 100 years 6% interest compounded annually is around $80.-

If my google math is right I would take the shilling.

well, the shilling would be collected now, wouldn't it? It's not like they are taking the bottle back to 1906 to acquire a 1906 shilling.

😀

Just think - it's possible the bottle was swallowed 1 or more times by something - perhaps a shark, or very large fish mistaking it for prey. Then, the bottle would have sat in the stomach contents until the fish died. Or maybe a shark swallowed the fish with the bottle in it. Either way, that bottle could have been in the gut of a shark for the past 50 years. Then, the shark died. Days, or months, or however long it takes later, the shark decomposed enough for the bottle to come free and float back up to the surface.
