I paid around $3k for a 12mhz 286-based system in 1987 or so. Not long afterward I paid another grand for a new mobo with a 20 mhz Harris CPU. And $900 for a 9600 baud modem.

I used to drive from NW Indiana to Elgin, IL, just north of Chicago back in 1988 because I had a guy up there that could get 1 megabyte sticks of RAM for $95, and I could take them back and sell them for about $120. Yes, this was in MEGABYTES. I'd take 15-20 back to Indiana with me.

Having 1 MB or more of ram in a 286 system was killer!

No mention of any PCs available in circa-1994 which often cost more than that Dell XPS, both adjusted for inflation and not.

I think my folks spent like $2500 on an Acer package in 1994.

F*ck that era. Eff you expensive PCs and huge technological advances era. You made me have to use shitty, slow old machines for 5 years at a time because it was too expensive to upgrade... Now I have money and my 5 year old machine still runs everything around medium/high.

Speaking of, I might be getting a cheapo $190 Intel computer stick to use as a pseudo-HTPC -- internet connector with an OS I'm familiar with.

Our Admin Officer in S1 in the Marines bought one of these around 1982, god only knows what he spent on it.

Old Compaq, even had to look it up, I guess they were brand new then.

Maybe he was reimbursed, we received something similar other than it being Green with a metal case and heavier duty for doing the Unit Diary entries not long after.

I was doing other things, but the WM that ran the thing was a good friend so I hung out and helped her with it messing around when not doing my regular S1 work. She knew more about it than I did, of course, but we collaborated a bit.

First real computer I bought besides a Commodore C64 was a little Packard Bell 386 I guess around 1989 at a Sears of all places.

Was the first I ever upgraded a CPU on too I guess

back in the days I had an Ultra 2 creator by sun. I wish i still had the PO. It cost about 25K back then and it had two ultrasparc cpus on it. I still have it stored away.

Oh and it did have a 4X Cdrom in a mid tower case with a 17" monitor the whole she-bang for $3200 back in 1994... Had got into a wreck and got some cash...:thumbsup:

Meh, agree with the overall weakness of the article. My second family computer was a Pentium 200 Pro, 32mb ram, 4mb Matrox mystique gpu, 4gb had, 33.6k modem with monitor for like 2900.

First Floppy disk controller software I ever wrote was one of those beasts for three freaking credits of a post-graduate level assembly techniques class.

There were a three of those things in rack and we would write our assembly code on one floppy and test our code on the other.

I had a P60 with a mb with built in ncr scsi. The mb was 750, the chip 1000.
