All,

I have a 1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille and the headlights don't come on, the sidelights do. I can't tell which fuse is the one for the headlights, but all the fuses I found checked out okay.

Can anyone help me or does anyone know of an online resource?

TIA

Both the headlights are burnt out? Get an voltmeter. Headlights off, measure all the fuses, note where voltages are and are not. Turn headlights on, measure again. Place where voltage has appeared should be headlight fuse.

check bulbs first like murphyrulez says, then check all the fuses. You can tell if a fuse is blown by looking at it.

Check to see if the brights turn on. My old Oldsmobile did this, it turned out to be a switch in the stearing colum went bad and costed only $10 to replace.

Check the Hi/Low beam kick-switch on the floor. Does it "feel" alright? If that switch isn't working right, the headlights might not turn on. I've seen (and fixed) this problem before.

YOu can get the bulbs at any auto parts store, some walmarts, Kmarts, etc. If they are sealed beam you need to know if they are Halogen or not, they will be different sizes if they are 4 lamp system opposed to 2 lamp system. If they are composite lamps you just need the halogen element bulbs. Do not touch the glass portion of the element bulbs or they can blow immediately just from the moisture from your fingers. You could have one of several problems but its not uncommon for one bulb to blow and surge power to the other causing both low beams to burn out. As stated check to see if the high beams work, and if they do you have a high probablility of blown lamps.

Garfang, can you give me more info on the fix you applied. Thanks.

Roger, unfortunately that site errors out. It looks to me like you have to register and pay for access.

mastertech01, high beams don't work either, neither do my brake lights. 🙁 I don't know how to get the lightbulbs out of the car. Can you give me a clue? May I offer you my deepest condolences for your missing Michelle.
