** A little more than 10% ECCp gain by removing ZoneAlarm...Also...SETI..not sure now! ?

I have a spare AT PSU(I think) you can have 🙂

I run ZA & haven't noticed any impact on WU times since I left it on permanently when I switched from dialup to cable. My WU times are still around 3hrs 20mins on Win2k SP2.I don't understand why you get such big differences Engineer.😕 ,not being attacked are you!?

I also use ICS & I had to lower ZA internet security to medium to allow it to work(not too happy about that though) ,apparently the Pro version allows you to leave it on high & alter settings in the advanced tab to let it through.

On a related note, has anyone experienced a sort of "cpu leak" from ZA? Occasionally, vsmon.exe (TrueVector Security Monitor, what ZA uses to do its magic) will start taking up CPU cycles, even when there is no internet activity. Sometimes, it can take up so much CPU cycles that the system will become very slow and unresponsive. I remedy it by ending the process, which ZA then asks to restart, and when it restarts everything's fine. It only happens sometimes, and come to think of it it hasn't happened in quite a while.

Yes. I have this far too often :|

This is interesting because I run ZA on all my crunchers. Last night I disabled ZA on 2 of the machines, a 1GHz P3 BX system and my dual ppro 233's. I will report the results soon, but I'm with assim on this. I can't see getting any big improvment. My BX system already is running avg of 5 hr 30 min.

edit: ....my main P4 rig is running 2:40 avg. I just see it. These times are in-line with the rest of the world.

My experiment is over. My P3-1GHz@1040MHz, BX mobo, 256MB ram, Win2k Pro results are in. This system has completed 804 wus with an average of 5:38:43. I have completed 3 wu's with ZA off and compared to my historical wu's:

AR.........Time w/o ZA...........Time w/ZA

0.424...5:46:10.........5:46:42

2.494...NA............4:56:36
2.522...4:56:04..........NA
2.747...NA............4:56:30 (I didn't have a 2.522 to compare, but these are the nearest to it)

0.522...5:45:49......5:46:15

My conclusion:

ZA has ZERO effect on SETI under my OS and setup. Also, just for kicks, I set the priority of ZA to LOW under win2k on my main P4 rig. It crunched out 7 wu's and my times were completely in-line with my typical wu's. I'm not sure what the issue is with gaining an hour, but I didn't see that effect at all.

I also haven't seen a Seti performance gain:-

PIII-667, 256Mb RDRAM, Win2000 SP2 + all patches.
Essentially a very similar machine to Engineer's except for RAM type / chipset.

What I have noticed is that since upgrading to the latest ZA I have had lots of problems with extremely slow Web Browsing / mail etc. Turn off ZA and everything is fine.

After looking at the results the last few days, I'm starting to think that the reboot after the removal of ZA did more for the PC than removing ZA did. The average has actually went up a tad....but since I was comparing WU's from the Pre-reboot vs the reboot, I think I was getting **false** results. I'll monitor it over the next few days to see.

The ECCp however seems to be pumping 10% more.....because it's always stayed the same until I removed the ZA...regardless or reboot or not!.

/me goes to change title!

It seems that if you are using V2.6 you are OK but the later version are flawed.

Some interesting reading in the reviews here

I've un-installed it and am now using Norton personal firewall, let you know how it goes...
