Dude. In your house you have something called a computer. On it, your daughter can use something called the internet. On the internet there is a search engine called Google.

And if she's getting homework on this surely she was taught this in class?

r=(a^2+b^2)^0.5 or r=sqrt(a^2+b^2) will do it. And the second one...17600?

You don't know what a product is, do you?

17600 was right...I did know that , but wanted to be sure it wasn't some kind of trick. It just seemed to easy.

The other answers were wrong.

No, they are correct. If you are using an online program to submit the homework you are probably entering the answers incorrectly... I used webassign before and you need to enter answers in a specific way, you're gonna have to find out what that is i guess.

Is there some kind of penalty for wrong answers?

If you knew it was 17,600, what was all that about addition and 270.

If you don't know the difference between Sum and Product, that's one thing. Don't come back and lie to us pretending you knew what it was.

GodlessAstronomer's answers are correct. You entered them wrong or it's looking for some other form. Can you use the square root symbol?

Could be |r| = ... if r is a vector, but it seems to me like this work is too simple for that kind of detail.

WebAssign will do simple calculations for you, using +, -, *, /, parentheses, and E-notation.
You probably need to answer something like
r*r = a*a + b*b
Edit - just saw your syntax guide. The answers as I gave them above are valid.

Believe me I feel like a moron saying addittion after I read what I wrote.😀

And yes for some reason I was thinking addition. You have to remember, sum and product? I haven't heard those terms since the early 80's.

Ten years later trying to figure out what sort of syntax the computer specifically wanted and I found this post. Just because the question is simple doesn't mean you can't answer with respect. The answer that worked for me was sqrt(a^2+b^2). To anyone coming here to find the answer as well, I'm sorry you had to read this as well.

Thanks for joining the forums, although posting in an 11 yr-old thread to answer a question that was already answered, berating the other members and choosing a name that continues the insulting is scarcely how to start off your relationship here in a good way.
