So I had a schedule conflict with work(CVS) this week- I was scheduled for Saturday 11-6 to work in photo. They do this often, I come in mid-day and releive whoever is working morning so the manager can have them work somewhere else, usually some special project that isn't terribly critical but needs to get done at some point. Same relief deal when the evening shift comes in. So photo is doubly covered, but I wasn't told this before. However, I forgot to inform my manager that my family is planning a trip out of state this weekend to attend my brother's graduation. So on Wednedsay I inform the manager of my plans and ask some coworker's numbers so I can call them and see if they can cover. She obliges and I actually get the store-wide phone list.

The next day I call the photo staff people and it turns out that they're all already working that day. WTF. So about now the manager tells me the technically, photo is covered and I don't actually need a photo person to cover my shift, just anyone who could do whatever the photo person would be doing when I releived them. Great, lots more people to ask. She gives me some names, I call and get mostly answering machines or they're already working. I talk to the manager again, and the looks at the schedule and tells me that all but two people are already working that day- it works out that way because my shift spans the middle part of both the normal shifts of the day. Sucky! At this point, its 10:00PM and I can't exactly call these people. I pull an all-nighter trying to get my laptop working for the trip, which we'll be leaving for at 8AM.

Luckily my family procrastinates and at 8AM coffee is being brewed. Now, I still can't call these two people because they're high school students (like me) and will be in school until well after my family and I will have to be on the road. So I have to make some kind of decision before we leave, and I can't get in contact with the other people who could potentially work for me. Store opens at 8AM, I call and talk to the same manager. I ask what my options are, they are to either get someone to cover your shift (impossible now), come in, or be fired for not showing up. Great- now I have the choice of either taking some kind of huge chance and leave on the trip, then calling the people and trying to get them to cover my shift while I'm on the road; or stay home, keep my job and miss my brother's graduation. :| Not happy. I knew that I would probably never be able to get my shift covered. So I'm forced to stay home if I don't want a big nice 'TERMINATED' on my job record. :|

Thanks a lot CVS. You can't have somebody miss a shift that is covered regardless so they can attend a big family event.

Oh, and I'm not sure if I'll be keeping this job anyway. I might have an opportunity to go and teach at a summer camp across the country, in which case I'd quit. I'd have no problem leaving the job right now- but I can't afford to be fired from my first job.

a termination from being a photo monkey matters?

go in saying you have to quit then....

seriously though, you forgot to mention this detail?!?!

To me being in business a long time sounds like the *on a friday morning* 'I totally forgot since I am working so hard, that tonight my grandmother is dying so I need to leave early, around 3pm....I really miss her'

Yeah, it's my fault, but I don't think they exactly need to threaten me with termination for wanting to miss a shift that's covered to attend a family event.

Did I mention that the job sucks anyway?

I think he's talking about anal sex but doing it in such a way to provoke others as immature as he is to erupt with high-pitched giggling.

I suppose you could quit, and if somebody questions you about it at an interview, you could offer the reason that they were too inflexible with their scheduling.

Agreed.
Though I've been employed by Walgreens since 1996, so I may have a slight bias.

you understand that if you are "terminated" they don't actually kill you right? just quit and find another crappy retail job.

Just quit then, not like you can't get another job once you get back, unless you were planning a career at CVS?
