Recently a new poster asked about help with overclocking. I noticed a number of the posts were rather caustic and nasty instead of helpful. I tried to respond with info that I thought was helpful and I also private mailed the poster with additional info.

It was the poster's first computer build EVER. He was scared and thought he could ask for help yet he was barraged with snipes.

I thought about the future of this forum and decided that maybe we should try to be a little more helpful and kind.

I am self taught in building computers. Let's try to help the newer members.

Uhoh.. while I agree with your intentions and your message, I fear you will be torn apart by those that do not.... good luck!

I agree, guskline, though I doubt you will be able to change anyone's actions except by being a consistently good example, and perhaps enlisting the help of other like minded posters. I'll help if I can, feel free to PM me with a link to any thread.

I'm prepared for that. At 62, I had my share of bumps, bruises, etc. My point is that the poster was a young man who built his first computer and needed help. Instead of being smart alecks we need to offer assistance.

There are a lot of very savy computer people on this forum (myself not included) who offer a lot of sound advice. Unfortunately, there are also some posters who, though very intelligent, aren't as patient or kind with a new poster.

Thanks Crashtech. BTW, I hopefully guided him on the proper procedure. he has a relative with computer experience who will also help.

Nice

I also agree that many a times people(especially youth) have this blood rush in their head & post unreasonable stuff on the net, including myself, but what I believe is desirable for anyone to have is respect for anyone & everyone(atleast on this forum) i.e. you can have a difference of opinion but to be nasty or hostile is completely unwarranted unless the other guy is swearing at you !

I know it's fun to tease people, but really it's much more fun when it is someone you know and not a stranger, because then you know how far you can go before it turns into real hurt.

I believe kindness to strangers is a cornerstone of human civilization.

1. This is the cpu and overclocking thread... NO BUILD advice allowed... unless its a CPU or overclocking specific question.

2. The section u ask for build advice is General Hardware...
http://forums.anandtech.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4
They are typically much nicer over there, because they dont have as much blue vs red going on there.

3. This is the internet... you will see trolls, and ogres and all the other nasty stuff u see in WOW.
Infact some might even LeeRoyJinkens you a build which is totally off and has a price tag which would rival super computers.
The first part in building a computer is learning what is applicable and what isnt...
if your reader is getting leeroyjinkins to listen to another person, well, let him get burnt the hardway and stop feeling bad someone stole your referee..
Again if that person goes on google for 10 seconds, he can find the answer.

4. I consider myself really patient at times... but sometimes 10 seconds on Google will save you from having me look at a full moon and change into a warewolf on you.

They say im abrasive!

I have never abused a newbie looking for help. Those that did should be ashamed.

sigh...

At first its easy.... helping everyone..
Then you realize your repeating over and over again.
Then you realize he isnt listening to you.
Then you realize greed has gotten the better of him.
Then he realizes his greed has pushed him 300% over budget.
Then he comes back to you.

Both realize you were correct. :whiste:

Sometimes u need to be firm and hard on the newbie....
Greed is BITCH, and 90% of time will always burn the newbie.
The only way to take GREED out of the newbie is either let him get burnt, or be firm with him so that he has very little options.

This is how i see 90% of the newbies in our hobby.

If the newbie knew what parts he wanted... he wouldnt be asking.

Another example.. if the newbie shouldnt trust normal people's feedback over a deidcated testing review unless its to ask about durability and time up on the part mentioned.
If the person cant get the information required out of a decient review... well.. it means he doesnt understand the parts to a "confident" manner which again means danger to the builder if he has to debug.

Helping people is not easy... its only easy when things go perfect... it becomes a total nightmare and crap fest when he has to debug and ur not there in person to debug for him.

Oh you mean the post which consisted in its entirety of the extremely consise and well thought out.... wait for it...

"How do you overclock?"

In fact lets not be shy here is the thread in question http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2315870

If you are going to post on an internet forum asking for help and you can't be arsed (and that really is the only excuse he had) to provide any relevant information thus making it a complete waste of time while we spend 3 days having a back and forth with someone to get the information that should have been provided in the first place then I think you deserve a little sarcasm.

By the way, as has already been pointed out the fact you got into a conversation with this person and managed to coax information out of him that told you this was his first build is irrelevant if he was having general hardware issues he should have been posting in general hardware, if he had given us any details he would have had a concise answer within an hour or so and we all could have gone on our merry ways.

Glad you get to get up on your soap box and feel all superior though, hold onto that warm fuzzy feeling, you will need it the 50th time someone posts "how do I overclock my I5 3570K" when there are already 49 threads explaining this. I have helped several people via PM on this forum in the last couple of years but only people who put in the effort required in their posts.

P.S Wrong forum. This has nothing to do with CPUs or overclocking.

If he is completely new to the scene, he would understandably not think that overclocking is an activity that is specific to a CPU and board combo, because that is not some "common sense" stuff that newbies of hardware will "just know". And so, if said newbie were curious and wanted to know, he would ask "how do you overclock?".

I see nothing terribly wrong about it. All I see is a thread started by someone who clearly never thought of overclocking before and wanted to know about it now, and used our overclocking forum as his very first baby step into it. Then, some of you clowns decided to go all righteous and "he deserves some sarcasm".

I'm locking this thread before some of you clowns end up with an infraction for being assholes.

I applaud the OP for his courage and sense of community stewardship in creating this thread and calling out the community as a whole to "step it up".

What is lacking in the thread in question, and most threads as a generalized assessment, is tolerance. Tolerance of others who may be at a different point in their lives, or on a track in life altogether different from one which we will personally travel down ourselves.

It leads to thread-crapping and flaming. Antagonistic posting, friction and inflamed posting.

Tolerance is the key, just let it go. Live and let live.

I'm locking this thread before some of you clowns end up with an infraction for being assholes.

Good call. Seconded.
