A little bored...consult?

I recently switched positions to gain a different(much more lucrative in the long run) skill set to what I was doing previously. Previously I was the senior SA for a virtualized server environment. I was in charge of nearly the entire environment, save for the network...which was the only piece of the puzzle I couldn't take from another group.

Lately I've been bored and found my lack of what I'll call productivity bothersome and have been wondering if I should try to consult in addition to what I am doing now. I really love the virtualization field and I want to capture additional skills in that field and use what I know to build stuff, solve problems and make people happy.

I even feel like I would do it for free to start, who needs virtualization help heh? Not that I expect anything to come of this post, trying to vent a bit to ease my nerves, but resume available upon request...

What city are you in?

I would totally do consulting if I felt I could do it in my market area...the problem is, I would likely have to travel to find clients. (or at least do cold calls)

Btw...what virtualization are you doing? Just VMware? We do VMware, Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp.

I live 1.5 hours west of NYC and 1.5 hours north of PHL. I live in PA but work in NJ.

I'm mostly experienced in XenServer(2 certifications now), dabbled in VMware but I prefer XS. XenDesktop was something I couldn't get rolling due to some politics.

If you have a full time job with a long commute now, adding consulting gigs might get risky.

I barely even feel like getting paid, just want to produce. I'd stop by somewhere just to chat or something, see if it was to lead anywhere for either of us.

"Consulting" rarely means "consulting" in the literal sense. You know the old saying: "Advice is cheap." It's true. You can almost always find someone whose brain you can pick for free.

More often, "consulting" means doing real, nose-to-the-grindstone work, and I doubt that you'd be willing to do that for very long for free.

Then I'll charge, woo!

I did consulting work for a year. Was paid a commission based on gross written premium for a book of business. But I work in the insurance industry. Wasn't fulfilling at all. I'd much rather do day to day busy work than provide general advice on some grand scale. What's the most aggravating is when said advice was ignored and it cost me potential income. You hired me for my advice. Take it.

I can understand that. I'd certainly love to do the actual work too, just kinda figured no one would want to pay.
