Yesterday, Shane McConkey was attempting a skiBASE jump in Italy. One of his ski bindings did not release in air and set him into an uncontrollable spin. He failed to open his chute and fell to his death.

He was survived by his wife and three year old daughter. He will forever be missed. Although well known for his extreme skiing ability, he also contributed ti ski design, developing reverse camber, reverse side cut powder skis (the Volant Spatula and then the K2 Pontoon).

something tells me ski base jumping with a failure to chute is a little more active than "passing away"

He had apparently done this 700+ times before. At some point you'd think he'd walk away...

I understand this was what he loved doing, and how he lived his life .... but he has a 3 year old daughter. When I look at my 2.5 year old daughter, I can't imagine participating in an activity where death is a very, very real possibility. I'll pre-empt the expected response about how it is more dangerous to drive my car .... blah blah. Still, I feel for his wife, and the little one :(

He's an idiot for doing this with a wife and 3 year old daughter. Take a break and get a normal day job or don't have kids.

Agreed! One condition to my wife marrying me was that I stop riding sportbikes. Been riding since I was 16; I was 38 when we got married. That's a lot of bike riding years. Honestly, I should've died about 10x already, so I guess it was time to quit whilst ahead.

Though I miss it and still lust for it, it's for the better; for my family AND for me.

I have no sympathy for this base-jumping idiot. I hope he was insured so his family can live well and maybe find a new daddy who doesn't have a death wish.

Which was bound to happen eventually. It happens to me all the time when I fall over on the bunny slope.
