a laptop question

I'm using something like that right now (Compaq Armada M300) as I await the parts for my PC to come.

The one thing that is the lappy is very light and small. It is ideal if you travel alot and don't need to carry around a floppy or CD-ROM drive. The biggest drawback is battery life. I get like 1 1/2 hrs on mine. It is terrible. It seems it always needs to be plugged in. And like iamme said, if you plan on playing any games on it, you better forget it. I have UT on my lappy and get like 15FPS in software mode at 320x200 and thats the best I can do. I'm sure some of the newer ones are better but I doubt they are substantially better.

How much tax/tariff/crap do you have to pay if someone buys the laptop in the US and ships it to you in Canada?

N8Magic, sully or PAB might know about this.

Screw them, I'm the one that works for customs. 😛 I'd have to pay the taxes which would only be a few hundred. But I do prefer to buy in Canada for the sake of supporting our industry. And if anything ever goes wrong--I know how fussy lappies can be--it's just easier to get repaired.

Thanks again for the other info listed...wow, it is very thorough. 🙂 *kisses for all*

thanks for the replies and information. i have heard that dell and toshiba are great laptops, but while i want quality, i know with those brands you're paying for the name as well. in any case, i'm willing to spend up to $3000 CDN for a system but including the wireless internet stuff. I know I could get a desktop for 1/3 of that price, though...i believe that $3000 CDN is about $2600 USD.

And I get no shake? 😛

You'll pay the same taxes as if you bought it right here in Canada - provincial and national sales tax. GST is 7%, provincial varies (Ontario is 8%.)

And CDN$3000 = US$2000. Yes, it is a beautiful day for Canuckleheads - your dollar is finally below the 1.50 line this side of the BRL (Big Red Line.) 😀
