A kid risked his life to steal from me, at most, a glass ashtray and or two cigar butts.

Backstory:

My neighborhood is in the midst of a transition. A quarter of it is vacant, being rehabilitated and flipped. Another quarter of it is selling for 400K+. Beautiful homes, new construction. The rest is rather dilapidated- the worst part of town if you will - exclusively low income rentals. I live in a house that was recently rehabbed. It was quite affordable and I really like it. I think I got a bargain, but only if the neighborhood continues to improve.

Crime is a problem around here. We had an armed robbery last weekend and I know of several home invasions that have happened on my block in the last 18 months. I keep a loaded AK47 in my bedroom and have been considering a handgun to stash near one of the rear entrances to the house.

Needless to say, I'm a little bit edgy.

What happened

I was on the phone with my girlfriend in the kitchen when I noticed a black male running across my deck which is a full story ABOVE grade. I made this observation through almost completely drawn blinds, only raised enough for my plants to get some sunlight.

Had I had that handgun I've been thinking about getting, I would have immediately taken it out there and something would have happened (that hopefully wouldn't have involved me shooting). However, because I had no nearby weapons and I didn't have shoes on, I hesitated momentarily. In that hesitation, I realized that my prowler was rather young (looking back, I'd have to assume that he was 14?). I got my shoes, got my keys and tore out the door as he was sprinting away. I bellowed at the top of my lungs "WHAT IN THE FVCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING???" several times. I couldn't think of anything else to say.

The kid ran into a house down the alley and in a few seconds I found myself beckoned by people who were obviosuly his parents. First, I got yelled at because Mr. Fvcking fatass (strange that he was white and the kid was black) is apparently the only one allowed to yell at his kid. When I told him what happened, he turned around and backhanded the kid, causing him to fall to his knees crying. Clearly this was some kind of NFL commercial break, because something happened and he immediately ran back inside. His wife tried to tell me that "these kids have always lived here" and implied that they might not be used to people as hair-trigger as I am. The wife was completley shocked when I told her about the recent crime in the area.

I tried talking to the kids after the parents went back inside (leaving me alone with a whole bunch of these kids why?). I tried to explain to them that I'm very hair trigger with everything that has happened around here recently and if they need to speak to me, they need to use my doorbell. They were very intimidated and very hesitant to shake my hand or even talk to me. I had to cajole their names out of them.

I just don't understand what goes through people's minds when they decide to risk it all for something stupid. What if I did have a handgun within arms reach of me when this happened? What if I let myself act out of fear? There would be a dead 14 year old. WHY?

Cliffs:
1) ace is in the kitchen
2) ace is startled by prowler on deck
3) if ace had the handgun he has thought about getting from time to time, things would have gone very differently for said prowler.
4) ace got into confrontation with parents and the parents were stunningly stupid

Why does cliff #4 not suprise me.
At least the kid got backhanded for it. He got off alot lighter than he might of had you been armed.

Stupid parents. No wonder the kid is a criminal. Physical abuse as punishment and the only symbol of authority. "Do whatever the fvck you want, but if I catch you or it makes me look bad I'm going to beat your ass."

She said "he just got off 'punishment' 5 minutes ago; I can't believe he just did this."

Seriously, had I been caught stealing something I can garuntee that my father probably would of done alot worse than backhand me.
I think I turned out just fine, and without a criminal record.

Maybe I missed it, but he didn't actually steal anything did he? He proably just lost a ball on your deck and went to get it. Probaly didn't want to knock on your door because he heard you have a fvcking assault rifle.

Alarm, motion lights, motion webcam and hand gun FTW next time.

I'd like to add however that last year when I was living in South FL renting an apartment I was taking a shower, came out and saw a big guy standing in my living room, me having just my towel around me and being shocked just said "WTF are you doing here!?!?!?" and he said "I'm here to fix your screen on your porch" (was after hurricane Wilma) he said that the rental office gave him a key and told him to just let himself in and fix my screen.

I was just thinking about that gun I had sitting in my next room though and thinking I could have actually killed this guy had I reacted differently.

The only reason I didn't bolt for the room and grab my gun was because I slightly noticed him since he'd been around for a few weeks fixing other apartments screens.

I told him to get the fvck out and then raised hell with the leasing office and told them that at no point no one was to ever be permitted in my apartment, etc...

All I could think after that happened was how I could have actually killed this guy and was within my right to do so considering he was an intruder in my home.

I totally understand what you're going through.

Pretty scary shyte to go through.

There was nothing on my deck that wasn't mine. Common curtosey is that you ring a doorbell instead of prowling if you do loose a ball/frisbee on someone else's property. The kid and I realized each other's presence just seconds before he would have been in arms reach of the only things he could have possibly wanted on my whole deck, either my glass ashtray or two half smoked cigars.

I have motion lights under the deck, but not on the deck as that would really really drive me nuts.

it's a Romanian one that went through an American importer and got an American made, semiautomatic trigger group. The assault weapon's ban is over. I like having 30 round magazines at my disposal and am looking at investing in a drum or two.

I made an edit ;)

But you gotta weigh safety vs. convenience.

It was also on the very light side of dusk so it was too light for motion sensing lights.

so the kid didn't steal anything? jesus, why are you so paranoid and trigger happy? growing up in my neighborhood, kids would jump into other people's yards to retrieve balls. perfectly normal for kids to do that instead of ringing the door bell.

Just because I didn't give him the chance doesent mean he didn't intend to.

...an armed robbery very close by last week, a felon who has been convicted for multiple, local home invasions just being paroled down the street and multiple home invasions...

I don't think I'm unreasonable to be so touchy...

You say this kid risked his life to steal at most a glass ashtray and two cigarette butts, but didn't you risk yours to save the same? ;) Running after the kid wasn't a great idea since you didn't know if he was armed.

And I really wouldn't buy that handgun. You'd probably shoot someone with it, and I don't think PA has landowner-friendly laws like Texas. ;)

What if you did shoot and kill this 14 yr old boy?
Would you have possibly been arrested for attempted murder or what?

He obviously did something stupid, but damn, an ak47.
I hope you don't shoot the wrong person someday and then you'll be posting from prison to ATOT about it.

You are too paranoid to own a weapon. I would probably be just as bad, so that is a reason that I don't own a firearm, either.

I seriously think you are going to kill someone soon. Where do you live in Philly? I was just there on Friday evening and got lost--I ended up in some ghetto part of town. I just found a major road and got out of there. I did, however, see a guy rolling a joint right on the street in front of a chinese takeout, though. heh...
