Sadly, shit like this happens all too often in Oaktown. Yes, there are some nice parts of the city, but no gates/fences/barriers to keep the ghetto-rats from infiltrating.
I've worked on several construction jobs in Oakland and Richmond, where they just walk into the site and walk out with all the dammed tools they can carry...and/or your lunch box if it's unsecured.

that is terrible :(

I would hate to have to tell a child that they would never be able to walk ever again, that they have to quit the basketball team, that they cannot do so many activities :(

Took his piano away as well, except for songs which don't use the pedals.

That's sad, makes you wonder why we keep letting those who break the law back into the streets again just to break it again. It's a vicious cycle:

Adams is no stranger to the criminal justice system. He has prior convictions for gun possession and for driving under the influence. After he pleaded no contest to felony evading arrest in 2006 for fleeing from an Emeryville police officer, Superior Court Judge Leo Dorado noted that he had also run from or physically resisted a California Highway Patrol officer in San Leandro and police in Albany and Berkeley.

He should serve life in prison/death penalty with no parole for something in the terms of armed robbery and attempted first degree murder. He was shooting at gas station workers and was intended on killing them. He's clearly, 100% guilty and I don't understand why a lawyer has a spine to defend someone like that. Going through court is just a waste of time and money.

Most excellent of him to play the race card in his previous hearing. Clearly, firing handguns at gas station workers (and missing and hitting 10-year-olds) is the only option left. What kept this guy from getting a job at Home Depot or Wal-Mart?

Actually it is something of a valid point. A number of barriers exist:

1) Lack of drivers license
2) Lack of reliable public transportation to/from the workplaces
2a) There are very few jobs in the inner cities that provide a livable wage. For that you need transportation to the suburbs.
3) Corrections history (Approximately 40% of black males ages 19-26 living in the city of Milwaukee have been in the corrections system, barring them from most employment).
4) Lack of the basic skills necessary to hold a job
5) Lack of even a HS diploma/GED (something like 30% of black males in Milwaukee drop out of HS)

1) they can get an ID for like 10 bucks
2) walk to the bus stop
2a) get a room mate
3) Stop being a douche bag and respect other people's properties/persons
4) Read a book, Read a book (How the hell hard is it to learn how to do a shitty entry level job?)
5) Mental retards, stay in school. Be like Mike, not Mikey the pimp and drug dealer
6) Stop blaming everyone else for your self-made plight

I've been to Milwaukee and yes, most of the area I saw was a shithole. I stopped two places to ask for directions. At the convenience store I was propositioned my a mid 40's crackhead with no teeth that would suck me off for 5 dollars because she hadn't ever had a white boy recently. The second was what I believe to be a small chop shop. They were actually cool and all and probably could not believe that I stopped there to get directions, but I sure as heck wasn't going to ask the dudes standing on the corners.

Feel sorry for the kid.

I am not saying it is an excuse, I am just pointing out that there are legitimate reasons for the situation to be as it is.

1) ID != Drivers License (and reliable vehicle)
2) It is not only the presence of the bus stop, but the routes necessary. For example, I live 10 miles North of downtown Milwaukee where I work. I am lucky in that the the one bus line right in front of my apartment just happens to stop 10 miles away directly in front of my office. Most are not so lucky. It is common to have to change buses 2-3 times, taking over an hour each way to/from your destination. That kind of travel time is not always feasible.
2a) Same applies to roommate
3) Fair enough, but what do you do with the large percentage of the population that has been incarcerated after they are released? The problem does not just go away.
4) Common skills needed that these people don't have are: How to fill out and understand a job application (both print and electronic), teamwork skills, etc. While these are all basic to every one of us they are NOT present in the entire population.

1) An ID will suffice until u can afford an el cheapy car and a DL
2) I have had to take the bus to work before and yes I actually had to walk quite abit. Some people commute 1-2 hours to and from work every day. It's a necessary evil sometimes or until u get enough money for a car.
3) Why not train them while they are in jail to enter the workforce then allow them to work out and get fat watching free cable tv? If jail was really unpleasant they would not be so many repeat offenders...
4) I'm sorry, but if you need help putting your name, SS, address, and info on a piece of paper you are pathetic. If you can't find a single family member or friend that can help, than you might as well go back to jail because you will never amount to anything. I really don't think a McJob really requires any skills, mustless teamwork. Show up on time, do what the boss says, go home.

Part of the sentencing should be the convicted telling the victim that they a worthless POS and that they are sorry. They should also be forced into labor to pay for all the kids medical and rehabilitation...

But we live in a bleeding heart society where criminals have more rights than victims, so this won't happen.

Yeah, a lame but true example - criminals get more cable channels than I do! And I pay! Great penalty system going on...

The guy (more than likely) paralyzed a 10 year old kid, though. He may have received a slap on the wrist for evading arrest and whatever he did earlier, but surely he'll get the book thrown at him this time.

Had a friend who was working in a lower class section of Cleveland replacing a roof. He heard glass break and looked down to see a man breaking into his truck. He flew down the ladder and ran into the street as the thief was beginning to drive away, the truck also held most of his work tools at that moment.

In anger he chucked the hammer in his hand at the truck, striking it on the tailgate. The thief stopped the truck, got out, picked up his hammer, got back in and drove off. I couldn't help but laugh when I heard that part even though I felt bad for him. Insurance eventually covered everything, thankfully.

I hope the child in this case fully recovers. The POS who shot him should be tossed in a cell and forgottten.

That's too bad.

A friend of mine was shot in the head during a robbery at another friend's house back in October. Just be hopeful since things haven't gone the worst they can yet.

Jared Adams, 24 - who once complained in a court case that young urban dwellers such as himself got few opportunities in life - was robbing the Chevron gas station across the street, according to police.

Well now he has an opportunitie for LIFE! Freaking asshats. I am all for someone trying to better their life, but this guy was not only playing the system, but also a freaking career felon.

QFT...not everyone gets to be Bill Gates.

If you are poor it's the way it was laid out for you and only you can work and change that (if ever).

You may have to rely on public transportation, never eating out, never having your own place or even one shared with only one other person. If one did not complete college and cannot, get the books the college kids used and sit down with them. Teach yourself, there are a ton of jobs that pay well and need no college degree, but they all require someone with a brain.

Hey, I was thinking of setting up a website for donations through PayPal for the kids family. They don't have a ton of money and they're probably going to have to move from their condo to a wheelchair accessible place and get a van or something.

The problem is they are pretty frazzled still and I'd feel awkward asking them to setup a PayPal account. I could use my PayPal account and give them the money but I was thinking people might think I'm trying to profit off this tragedy.

Also I'm not sure if I need to deal with any tax issues on donations like this. Anybody got any thoughts?

Donations for you would count as income. You would then need to figure out if you can 'gift' it under this situation or they'd have to claim it as income. If they were looking for donations they should set this up, you could do the legwork for them by contacting those places that cater to victims like this (wheelchair accessable companies would be a start).
