Sorry to hear about your setback. I'm tempted to suggest that you might hang in there for a year or two to see if things will turn around, but I don't have that much hope for the domestic auto makers. Are there any jobs with Toyota in Goergetown that'd suit you?

Good luck.

move there and you'll be close enough that I can start teaching you how to drink

Go get some beer and spruce up your resume. Don't start drinking with hard alcohol.

HELL NO! Start with some sweet "girly-drinks" that taste good and don't fuck you up too fast. As long as you don't over-do it, the sweet syrupy stuff won't give you a bad hangover. (yes, too much will leave you worshipping the porcelain god whose name is RALPH! 😀
I never did develop a taste for beer. I can drink it, but I really don't like it. If I buy a 12 pack, 9 of them get used for beer can chicken.

Engineer...sorry to hear about the job misfortunes. I've been through very similar situations over the years, and there's no way around the fact that it sux.

Definitely time to polish the resume and start looking. Maybe the job you declined before might be a good interim place to start. (you can always bail if it turns to shit too)

Sometimes a bad job is better than no job, but usually only for as long as it takes to find a better job. I've bounced from job to job all my life, working from a union hiring hall, and know allegiance to no company. IME, there isn't a single one that would hesitate to do to you exactly what yours did if it meant saving a bit of money for the bottom line, or to pad some CEO's golden parachute. (fucking cocksuckers):| They want/demand your loyalty to them...but they show you ZERO loyalty. That used to be one of the great things about this country...people worked for the same company their entire career. They took care of the company, the company took care of them. No so nowadays.
Fuck the corporations.

If you don't get paid for OT, don't work OT. Is that an option?

I didn't know OT existed for salaried employees. I sometimes have to work crazy amounts of hours but don't get any extra compensation since I'm salaried.

as far as the free market goes, i'm sure you can find some other company willing to pamper your ass and shower you with all the riches you so desire and deserve.

Since the US dollar is worth shit right now, how easy is it for foreign companies from countries of favorable exchange rates to employ US personnel within the US?

Well, at least you're in a safe position. You've got a house paid off and a marketable career. Keep working to pay the bills, but I would start looking.

If you call up the company that was interested in hiring you and explain that your situation has changed they may help you out.

Sorry about the situation Engineer, good luck, but at least your still employed. I spend most of my days right now waiting for a person to show up at my cube with a empty box for my stuff. Good times.

I hope your company expect turnover on top of hte people that they already got rid of.
Absolutley they do.

You should all quit on the same day

LOL. About half of the people (all skilled trade machine, tool and die builders) on the floor have 35 years or more (up to 42) years experience. They could all retire, and many could make almost as much as they do now, since there is no overtime right now (even with jobs piling up).

Look at it as a wake up call, you might find better job now that you have more experience. Lighten up man, just don't buy any xmas gifts this year 🙂

Thank God NO!

Hey! While our job market may be in the crapper, our state still is pretty effin' beautiful. Northern part of the Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula for the win.

Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor are doing pretty well for themselves (Quite a bit of growth, you should see the GR skyline! GR is building tall buildings, where as Detroit is slowly demolishing everything.) GR can thank the Devos and VanAndels and all the other filthy rich philanthropists who are building our city and providing non-manufacturing jobs to the area.

What's fair wage?

$3 hr?

$2 hr?

$1 hr?

25 cents?

You and your buds talk the talk but never say what the wage should be.
