"Keep cash in your house, bank accounts are lame."
And then have thieves break into your house, eh? I think it's great to have some cash at home, but most of your money should go to the bank or some other protected safe box, I think.
Gobadgrs, I can see why you go broke! Switch to Washington Mutual. They're expanding, so chances are you've got a branch at your state. I've been using WAMU for almost 7 years now. They offer free checking accounts.
They only made a mistake once. I had more than enough money in my account, went out to purchase something at the grocery store. I got an "unauthorised" response. I was shocked. I used the last cash I had in my purse to pay for the item. Then I went to the ATM to check my balance. Surely, the bank had erred and my account read a negative balance. As if that was not enough, I was charged overdraft fee and lost my ATM card the same day. The bank wouldn't send me a new one until the negative balance was investigated. I had to borrow dollars from my siblings. It was a terrible feeling seeming so poor even though I knew I had enough money. It turns out someone else's account number was the same as mine, except with an extra zero. He made a withdrawal and it went to my account instead. The bank promptly took care of the matter, sent me a copy of the documents submitted for withdrawal by the individual whose account got mixed up. They waived the fee and restored my balance. It was such a relief.
My savings and checking accounts are comfortably rested.
