"Keep cash in your house, bank accounts are lame."

And then have thieves break into your house, eh? I think it's great to have some cash at home, but most of your money should go to the bank or some other protected safe box, I think.

Gobadgrs, I can see why you go broke! Switch to Washington Mutual. They're expanding, so chances are you've got a branch at your state. I've been using WAMU for almost 7 years now. They offer free checking accounts.

They only made a mistake once. I had more than enough money in my account, went out to purchase something at the grocery store. I got an "unauthorised" response. I was shocked. I used the last cash I had in my purse to pay for the item. Then I went to the ATM to check my balance. Surely, the bank had erred and my account read a negative balance. As if that was not enough, I was charged overdraft fee and lost my ATM card the same day. The bank wouldn't send me a new one until the negative balance was investigated. I had to borrow dollars from my siblings. It was a terrible feeling seeming so poor even though I knew I had enough money. It turns out someone else's account number was the same as mine, except with an extra zero. He made a withdrawal and it went to my account instead. The bank promptly took care of the matter, sent me a copy of the documents submitted for withdrawal by the individual whose account got mixed up. They waived the fee and restored my balance. It was such a relief.

My savings and checking accounts are comfortably rested. ;)

Not necessary, of course, but an amenity.... if it doesn't matter it doesn't matter. I made my car payment at a branch office (this was actually a regular bank, though) for a while, and I found out the hard way - the $25 late fee way, that they aren't open at all on saturday and sunday.

Wire Transfers? No problem. See above.
I don't see where it saus about wire transfers. I mean from external banks, ie payroll, stock, etc. I've had a problem with my credit union dragging @ss- takes them 3 days, no matter what. They say it's the way credit unions operate

Minimum account requirements? The minimum balance at my credit union is $5 in savings, and $0 in checking.

Credit Unions beat banks no question! When my wife and I got married, we dumped her bank (Suntrust) and stayed with my credit union. Suntrust was charging her $120/yr just to have an account with them!
My acct. req's are low, too, but they recently increased the minimum to like $250 for checking.. that's for new accounts, though.

Almost all of these problems can easily be avoided by being more responsible. I don't want to be an a$$ but is it that difficult to check the balance in your checking account before withdrawing money? Most accounts need a minimum amount of cash before they start charging you fees, read the agreement carefully before you start an account. If you know you're going to overdraw from time to time get the overdraft protection usually offered at the bank. It's a small monthly fee but you won't be charged when you overdraw.

I am not trying to defend the banks, they could certainly make their policies clearer but that's how things are. I have a Prima account with Bank of America and I've experienced ZERO problems so far. Same goes with my parents, brother, and sister.

true story: friend of mine's father was a real miser. He didn't trust banks at all. He kept well over a million dollars in his attic locked in trunks. Sadly, one day there was a fire and the whole house went down including the trunks. He was so cheap he didn't buy firesafe trunks or safes. :(

Sometimes you can get screwed over by credit unions, too. I had an account at Northern Schools Federal Credit Union, and if I had close to $25.00 in my checking account, and wrote a cheque, they would charge be a $25.00 overdraft fee BEFORE the cheque cleared, so the cheque COULDN'T clear! Bastards. :|

That sucks man. Banks in the US bend you over and feed it to you. Royal Bank in Canada has always been good with fees for me, though I recently found they charge a cash advance fee on credit cards and I could swear they never used to do that.

Compassbank charges me $6/month for my account. I should do something about it but I'm still in shock after so many months that I'm paying $6/month that I am frozen in fear of what to do about it.

On the plus the one time I overdrafted (not really my fault) they gave it back.

Wow that's pathetic. What a dumbass! If I was STINKING loaded I'd have a significant amount of cash or real gold in my house but it would be in 5 foot thick fireproof safes.

BTW Gobadgrs get a credit card for times like this! I use mine for virtually everything I buy and just pay it off after. I've already in the past 6 months gotten $100 worth of gift certificates half of which I've already claimed at best buy :D

Join a credit union. They are non-profit, most of the profits go back into services for the members. I get better loan rates at my credit union than any bank I have checked. Plus, I get a free $1000 insurance policy, no monthly fee, only have to keep $5 in the account, and they have automatic overdraft protection. There are no dumbass BankofAmerica fees like making too many deposits in a month. Can someone explain to me why a bank would charge you a fee for giving them more of your money to invest and make profit off of? Thats fscked up!

If you can't find a CU, try Compass bank. They refund ALL ATM fees (no 1 year limit when I had them), you just have to mail your receipts to them every month to get a credit on your account. Plus, they are very reasonable fee-wisefor a bank, and friendlier than BofA.

Yeah a real hassel :Q Still it's better than nothing. I use an ATM no more than once a month though so it's not really a big bonus for me.

That is why I refuse to let the bank that holds my mortgage do automatic drafts. I walk my mortgage payment up to a window at one of their locations and hand them my check and get a receipt back.

They royally screwed me with trying to set up an automatic draft payment the first time. I cancelled immediately and pay it myself now.

I always find an ATM that doesn't charge fees to avoid this hassle. In the Atlanta area, Publix supermarkets use an ATM network that does not charge fees. If I am rushed on time and there is no Publix nearby, I'll just go into a grocery store, buy a pack of gum, and ask for cash back with my debit card.

Nope, what if someone breaks in... best bet is a Mason jar buried in your back yard, preferably under a dog house with a dog named killer....

What bank is it?
Wells Fargo sucks, B of A sucks worse...
best bet would be a credit union.

BTW, you should really change banks. Paying for a checking account and stuff like that is BS IMO. Banks almost always have incentives and free sh*t for new members so I think you should take yer $24 and split.

What bank are you with?
