A Hopeful Decent Gaming Build.

Currently I would use it mostly for WoW, but would like to play anything recent at medium to lower graphics if necessary. Looking to spend around the 500 region and ordering parts in the US. I'm also not familiar with overclocking at all, and have no REAL brand preference but last time I built my own I went with AMD.

Here is what I have so far:

Mobo - ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX AM3+ AMD - $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157323

CPU - AMD FX-6300 - $140
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819113286

Ram - $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231311

PSU - $45
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139026

Optic - $15
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106289

Case - $30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811208020

GPU - $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125403

HDD- $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148767

At the very least I'm just mildly paranoid that my parts wont work together. From everything I know....which granted isn't a lot, they should. But any input/recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ok, this is going to take me a few minutes. Newegg has 10% off using code VMEPROMOMAR13 when you check out using v.me, so I have to go back and forth to see what Newegg has cheaper at 10% off, and what's still cheaper at NCIX/Amazon.

You might want to go with an FX-4100 and a better graphics card (like a 7770) instead. For gaming, you want to spend on the CPU and GPU in a roughly 1:2 ratio (at least 1:1).

I was actually about to link that card after Sleeping said something. Thanks for the input Seraph...swapped out the case and mobo for that combo, added the card and went to the 4100 like suggested. Swapped out the ram.

So I should be good to go on the order and I'll have it next week! Thanks again! - Good usage of a bonus! I've been playing on a a laptop as of late and its driving me nuts.

Seems good. I would definitely get the 6300, its only $20 more so it will not break your budget.

PCpartspicker is wrong, that 7770 is $140. Also, Outlet PC will have ridiculous shipping for that DVD-R. That case looks craptacular, and you dropped down to a 760G when a 970 is only a little more.

I'm just doing my best to help OP get more power for his dollar.

Yes, the case doesn't look great. But the cooling is reasonable, it's pretty quiet, and it's got USB 3.0 for very cheap. That's a hard combination to beat, for, you know, the object that goes under your desk and you don't look at. If the OP has no complaint about how it looks, don't complain for him.

This Asus 7770 is $110 after a $20 rebate and is only around $100 after a promo code and shipping. This DVD burner is $18 with free shipping from Newegg.

Suggesting an old-and-busted FX-4100, a bad case that'll have no airflow (mesh interfering on both sides of the single fan), a 5 year old motherboard, and expensive video card that relies on a huge rebate isn't "more power for the dollar."

The motherboard you selected doesn't even have USB 3.0.

Don't prioritize USB 3.0 over cooling or quality in a case.

Okay, fine. I see now that you did post a build, which is perfectly good and better than mine. Clearly, I'm not very familiar with AMD's CPU line and deserve whatever scorn I got there. I'm still going to try and play devil's advocate with an Intel build:

CPU: Intel Core i3-3220 3.3GHz Dual-Core Processor ($114.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Foxconn B75M Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($58.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Patriot Viper 3 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($47.98 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($49.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Asus Radeon HD 7770 1GB Video Card ($114.39 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 430W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($15.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $507.30 BEFORE any rebates and taxes. $487.30 after the two $10 rebates available (one on the case, one on the PSU).

The i3-3220 is much stronger in single threaded applications, like games, than the FX-6300, especially if overclocking is something you don't want to do. It also costs less.

Okay, I legitimately checked all of those links, and all the prives were right and the shipping times were solid when I checked.

Foxconn is actually better than many similar Chinese corporations. The allegations were mostly dismissed, and they receive undue media attention due to Apple. Does that make the condition okay? Of course not, but you have to accept that pretty much all of your electronics are made like this. Buying from another brand does not absolve you of guilt.

Anyway, I fully admit the superiority of your build. I'll leave the OP to choose between the i3 and an FX-6300.

Guilt or no guilt, their motherboards are pretty bad.

Unless they're making it for Intel branded motherboards. Or am I wrong here?
But if Foxconn is "free", definitely avoid them.

I was referring to Foxconn-branded boards. They make plenty of other boards (Intel and otherwise), but they're just manufacturing those. Foxconn don't get to roll the HW and SW design that Intel does into their own branded products.

Both HP and Gateway have been using Foxconn boards for awhile now in alot of their desktop offerings. The problem is what enthusiast is going to spring for Foxconn when they can purchase Biostar or Asrock boards for about the same cost.
