I used to be into flight sims quite a bit back in the day. I wanted to get my actual pilots license though. Whats a good Flight Sim to download and try out? I'm downloading the X-Plane demo now.
 
Shouldn't this be in the gaming forum?

How flight sims appeal to people I'll never know. Setup is sweet but doesn't change the fact I'd be bored to tears playing in it.

This is beyond gaming. Personally, I don't want to fly a plane or pretend to fly a plane, but I can appreciate the work done to get to where he is now.

FSX or FS9 are probably the best available right now. Give them a try if you're wanting to do some basic flying. Things can get incredibly complicated if you want too

I guess it just appeals to certain people. Not surprisingly a large portion of online flight sim players are pilots in the real world too (Private or greater).
 
Very nice. I was lucky enough to get a little stick time in the C17 simulator at McChord AFB. We did short field work and aerial refueling.

Most people who "play" civilian flight sims don't play it as a game. They play them because they're interested in aviation and do it for a multitude of reasons. Perhaps you can't afford to get a pilot's license, or you might already have one, but flying isn't cheap.

I love flying flight sims when the mood strikes because I'm interested in aviation, and I know I won't be able to afford getting a pilot's license anytime soon.

The trek down that road would cost tens of thousands of dollars as well, and would require a ton of luck and connections in the business.

Getting hired by even a regional airliner is extremely difficult. You need a ton of hours and you'd better know the right people.

A number of years ago I decided I was going to change careers and become a pilot. I quickly realized that it would require too much luck to make it all happen. Finished my PPL and now it's a once-in-a-while hobby.

Atleast you noticed that.. More than half of the kids I go to school with are studying to become pilots and for some reason none of them realize that very few people are getting hired until it is too late. Hell, my brother just went through the entire job search fiasco and after 3 months he compromised and took a job flying blimps (oddly, it pays much better than a regional)

How about viewing the videos FIRST before making an asshat comment? Gaming forum? Really?
You don't get impressed easily do you? FYI, you CAN'T just make a fully functional 737 cockpit out of a cardboard box. It takes many months of work, money, and skill to make something like that happen.

I'd like to see someone make a DIY hydraulic system. A guy in Dallas used to have a little place set up that had an old cockpit mounted up somehow. Push the stick left, it rolled left. Not perfect, but better than stationary. That was probably 25 years ago...
 
That is damn impressive. Whether or not it's your cup of tea(certainly not mine), it's a testimate to his determination to the hobby. Two thumbs up from me.

The cool thing about sims is that you can do all sorts of stuff that you'd never be able to in real life even if you were wealthy enough to afford your own 737. Land an overweight plane on one engine in a thunderstorm, stuff like that. I can't imagine caring enough about a flight sim to put that kind of time and money into it, but I do admire the guy's dedication.
 
this is just insane...

i used to be an avid Microsoft FS user. i haven't played it in years b/c i've just been busy with otherthings. but after watching this, i'm feeling the itch to load FS9 back on one of my computers.

Assuming you have at least a multi-engine commercial instrument rating... it will cost you about ~$8000 + hotels, food, etc for a B737 Type rating. Once you get that you will have to find someone to rent you a B737 which probably costs $2500/hr to fly.
