A grocery item was opened before it left the store...

It isn't necessarily opened a lot. Maybe when you take the lid off your cottage cheese, you find that the plastic seal has been pulled open on one side just a little. There is otherwise no obvious evidence of tampering.

Do you eat it, or return it to the grocery?

i'd return it and ask for a new one. the store shouldn't complain, it happens alot.

I just throw it away, I just consider it a idiot/lazy tax on myself for not checking it in the store like I usually do.

Return it. Probably nothing wrong with it, but you never know what some bored or irate grocery store employee might have done to it.

Usually I just throw it out, unless it was something super expensive.

Yup. Too lazy to return it right away. I'd probably forget if I kept it around, intending to return it next time I went to the store. Then I'd have some open suspicious food in my fridge for months on end.

Vote for "eat it."

Toss it. Food poisoning sucks even though the chances might be slim. It's not worth the loss of a few bucks.
