UIC freshman killed in downtown car accident

from staff reports
September 23, 2003

Melissa Diego, a 19 year-old UIC freshman who has been described as "affectionate" "loving," and a "big sister," was killed on Friday in a car accident.

Diego, a native of Wheeling, Ill., was a passenger in a van that went through a red light at the intersection of Ohio and Michigan. The van was hit by a taxi cab. Diego was the only one of the van's five occupants who was killed.

Diego was a track star at Wheeling High School, and was to start with the UIC Flames Womens Track Team. She was preparing for their first big competition when she was killed. She was rushed to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, but died of multiple injuries.

Her parents have urged others to learn by wearing seat belts at all times.

Many friends are expected to attend the visitation for Diego, which will be 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights.

Melissa Diego's funeral will begin with prayers at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 411 N. Wheeling Road, Prospect Heights

Former Wheeling High athlete mourned
By Cass Cliatt Daily Herald Staff Writer

To Melissa Diego, it didn't matter who you were - nothing could stop the former track star at Wheeling High School from hugging you.

The 19-year-old's affectionate nature won her many friends, and all of them mourned Monday for the 2002 graduate who died in a weekend car crash.

Diego was one of four or five passengers in a van that was hit by a cab Friday at a Chicago intersection.

Scores of students have lighted candles and left flowers in front of the Wheeling home where she lived with her parents before starting school at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

"It's all because of the respect they have for my daughter," said Eliseo R. Diego, Melissa's father. "She, in fact, was a big sister to a lot the of other runners at the high school who are doing very well in state competition."

Diego began running in track and field at MacArthur Middle School, running with a team that went to the state finals and won the state title her eighth-grade year, her father said.

At Wheeling High School, she was a member of the varsity girls cross country team for four years, winning several awards on a team that won first place in the Mid-Suburban Cross-Country League.

Through it all, she made time to be the "best big sister" and support her 17-year-old brother, Ryan - now a senior at Wheeling High School - at his volleyball, wrestling and cross country events.

"At UIC, the Flames inquired about her and wanted her to join," Eliseo Diego said of the university's track team. "She was accepted as part of the team and she was preparing for their first big meet when this happened."

Diego's family thinks she was leaving work at a Chicago restaurant near the intersection of Ohio Street and Michigan Avenue when the van she was riding in went through a red light Friday.

She was rushed to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center but died of multiple injuries.

Diego's parents were vacationing in Wisconsin, and family members wouldn't tell them about her death until they rushed home Saturday morning.

"The message that I have imparted to all the kids that have hugged me since this happened: Buckle up. I don't think Melissa was wearing her seat belt," Eliseo Diego said.

The last time her parents saw their daughter alive was when she stopped at their home last Tuesday to drop off a peace lily.

"She wrote on an index card for her mom, 'I love you,'æ" her father said. "And she was gone. She called later to ask if the peace lily had bloomed.

"I think my wife has made peace with the fact that Melissa is now in heaven and her purpose in our life was to keep us merry the 19 years she was with us," he said.

Wheeling High School students observed a moment of silence Monday to remember Diego and will do so again today, said Associate Principal Kelvin Lane.

A picture of Diego and her brother has been placed in the cross country team's display case at Wheeling High School, surrounded by the labels "competitor," "friend" and other words that classmates use to describe her.

Many friends are expected to attend the visitation for Diego, which will be 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights.

"The classmates of my daughter and my son, especially the parents of the cross country team, have been unbelievably helpful in our grave times of need," Eliseo Diego said. "We're so thankful."

Thank you for taking the time to explain the situation a bit more conjur.

Since i was recently involved in a car accident that killed a mother of 2 young children, this sorta brings back those same feelings since I know what its like to witness such a thing.

Sorry to hear about this, unfortunately it happens all to often. :(

Yup, completely, 100% preventable.

- Wear your seatbelt
- Don't run red lights (not her fault obviously)

Definitely tragic, though, more so because it could have been so easily avoided.

No kidding. I've been in two accidents, both of which - had I not been wearing my seatbelt - would have probably sent me through the windshield of my vehicle. I got lucky in both cases though; worst injury I recieved from either of those was a big nasty bruise where the seatbelt caught me across the chest. I have certainly learned my lesson, and I harp on anybody who gets anywhere near my car to wear theirs as well.

her boyfriend's little letter, however good-intentioned, made him look like a freaking idiot.

Kinda like your little post.

I guess the grieving process means nothing to you until you've gone through it. You have no idea how much even just writing something can make you feel better.

Get back to me when a friend of yours dies suddenly.

I wouldn't think there'd be much point in "Skoorb-Effecting" your own blog. :p

Sucks to be her. It's too bad for her family that she was killed for being reckless but it happens. I feel for her family but I've got no sympathy for her.
