UIC freshman killed in downtown car accident

from staff reports
September 23, 2003

Melissa Diego, a 19 year-old UIC freshman who has been described as "affectionate" "loving," and a "big sister," was killed on Friday in a car accident.

Diego, a native of Wheeling, Ill., was a passenger in a van that went through a red light at the intersection of Ohio and Michigan. The van was hit by a taxi cab. Diego was the only one of the van's five occupants who was killed.

Diego was a track star at Wheeling High School, and was to start with the UIC Flames Womens Track Team. She was preparing for their first big competition when she was killed. She was rushed to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, but died of multiple injuries.

Her parents have urged others to learn by wearing seat belts at all times.

Many friends are expected to attend the visitation for Diego, which will be 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights.

Melissa Diego's funeral will begin with prayers at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 411 N. Wheeling Road, Prospect Heights

Wonder if charges will be filed against the driver?

Missed a bold spot there.

Sucks to be her. It's too bad for her family that she was killed for being reckless but it happens. I feel for her family but I've got no sympathy for her.

well to her defense it doesnt look like she was driving on the other hand she didnt buckle up call it like you will

She didn't buckle up, recklessness on her part. The driver being irresponsible was no fault of hers.

she was a bright student, but that one moment of stupidity of not buckling up cost her life.

Man, turns out I know the driver. He;s in intensive care right now and in her defense, it was a side impact.

I would imagine he would have had to run that red light REALLY late into to have such a hard impact. The light would have to be at least red on his own side of the street before he ran across it.

I don't imagine the seat belt would of helped that much but then again it might have. She was sitting in the back seat and the card was hit on the drivers side so only the driver and her were injured.

I have tried to become more compassionate about this. It effects everyone differently. It is always sad when someone dies.
