A Green Beret has passed away

My friend has informed me his father suffered a heart attack today. He was a highly decorated veteran of the Viet Nam War, and a real SOB when crossed. In the 20 years I knew him I don't think he had 1 healthy day. Despite that, a great guy that will be missed.

I expect the VA and Social Security to be notified tomorrow. What else has to be done to ensure he gets his military funeral? Are there any benefits or expenses for his next of kin?

you're going to find he won't get much in benefits either directly or to be passed on once he's dead. I'd start contacting local VFW and similar groups if they want a military presence at the funeral. Because of the increase over the last couple of years, the support the military actual gives in this regard in disappointingly small.

For my Dad, the funeral home already knew what to do and who to contact for the military service. They took care of it for us and it was a very nice service from Fort Bragg and I was presented with the flag. He was flown to and buried at Beverly with his first born son* who died when my Dad was still on active duty and was buried there in the Nat'l Cemetery.

*My oldest brother of course, but he died at age 4 long before I was born so I never knew him.
