Actually, if you won't be gaming... 9600XT 256mb would do fine...

wouldn't a 6200 or x300 suffice?

9700pro is cheaper than a 6200/x300 and is faster.
get a sued one for around $75. it is faster than a 6600 stock and almost as fast as a 6600 oced.

Dont wast your money on a 3D card .. wait until there's something you wanna play befor going out and buying one.

8mb SVGA $5 ^_^ .... if you want to run divx movies maybe a 64mb/128mb/ geforce4mx for $15

If your not going to play games at all ... get the cheapesting thing money can buy .... in the YEAR 2005 --- Its not the videocard anymore that gives you a good 2D image its the monitor...

A 19" 4ms/8ms LCD with a $15 geforce4mx will look 100 times sharper and brighter in 2D then a 19" CRT with a Geforce7800GTX

fixed. everyone knows a quality crt is better than a quality lcd in image quality.

Id avoid the X300 Hypermemory and 6200 Turbocache simple because they use system memory as part of the video memory. Look for something with dedicated memory, not shared memory.

X600, X700, 6600, X550 and some others.

I'd get something like a Radeon 9600 or GF FX 5700 if you really don't plan to play anything new, it's dirt cheap and still good enough for most DX7/8 era games. On the upper end of the price scale you mentioned, the GeForce 6600GT is the fastest.

I want my overall video to be as fast as possible.

Will getting a card with DDR3 make a difference to a non gamer like myself ?

Probably not. Any card in the 150 and under price range isn't going to be powerful enough to need DDR3 levels of bandwith.

Little bit confused here... Does your term "Non-Gamers" mean they will not be playing any games? Because if so, it does not even have to have decent 3D. If that is the case, absolutely any card will do fine.

Somehow I think you mean "Non-Gamers" as in, not picky about framerates and picture quality.

The FX series might be good for someone who not that serious for any type of games.

the 6200 Turbocache will still be fine. It doesn't use up all that system memory if you aren't playing games. My 3800+ X2 work rig is running the lower-end turbocache model(only 16MB onboard) and it handles fine for normal usage.

I got the Turbocache model I listed earlier....With the DFI it only cost me $29. This is just a temporary card to build my new system. I do want a better card though.

By non gamer I mean not hardcore about it...not going to get the latest & greatest videocard for $500 or $600. I do like to play an occasion game, but that is not what my machine is for. That is why I am trying to strike a compromise and get a "decent" 3D card with great 2D.

So then, 9800Pro or 9600XT is all you need... both will play most modern games (exception maybe AoEIII, FEAR, basically not the newest and greatest games).
