btw, thanks to everyone who is making legitimate, helpful posts. i didn't start this thread to get anyone's opinion on the patriotic merits of owning a car made in the US or analyze the effects my purchase would have on our economy (which are huge, i know). i just wanted some advice on finding decent American made cars.

I love my Dodge Neon. I got it when a dealership was clearing out their 04 stock at practically break-even prices, to make way for 05 stuff. So around $10k for a brand new car - standard, cruise, cd changer, fog lights, power steering/windows.

The Dodge Neon is the highest maintinence production car in the world.

heh, I hope you're kidding.. it's one of the most reliable cars made in North America... (I mean by one of the big 3)

I have had mine for almost 5 years, and have only done the brakes once, and changed the oil. completely flawless service... passed E-test with flying colors, still drives almost like new.

don't speak if you don't know.

I hope you feel like a big man - insulting me over a little joke, I personally see no point in it. I would argue (some of) those cars are nice pieces of art, but I still think they are crap cars in terms of performance. Most could be beaten round a track by a stock civic.

I would bet that you're wrong. What, in your weak opinion, is the epitome of performance?

A Buick is a HAUS. As much as I hate to admit it, Buicks are great cars. My used Buick that I drove in high school at 90,000 miles became my brother's car at 120,000 miles.. Then, at about 170,000 miles, it got wrecked. But, my brother hardly EVER changed the oil, treated the car like shi\t, never checked fluids or anything.. and it just drove.

My dad and mom both have Buicks now too (one bought used, one bought new) and neither has been taken to the shop for anything other than oil changes.
Yup, if it had a 3800 it was pretty much bulletproof. 🙂

I don't know about you, but a Civic is unconfortable at any speed, and loud when push hard. It's an economy car that's reliable and has good fuel economy. Over all, just like any other Honda, much overrated. I used to have a Civic until this year, my mom has an Accord, both of them do break down, and expensive to fix. I thought the Civic was much better than my prior car, a 97 Dogde Neon, but it didn't require less maintenance, and way more expensive at the shop.

You would think people would know better by now then to ask about american cars on this forum. The people that know anything about cars are in the minority while the other 80% just want to spout off BS.

Horribel car. But it is probably as reliable as anything else.

Late model Olds 88/Regency (GM 3800 Series II V6).

Got a '97 and it just works. Loaded and a great factory sound system! Sure, it doesn't look as cool but damn it's comfy on long rides. 20/29 mpg.

The first gens were a bit rough around the edges, but the 2nd gens are good cars. I dunno why its got such a bad rap. Mines been trouble free as well.

Hey Sirspotti, Check out the auto auctions that are sometimes held by your local county. In the bay area where I live there is an auto auction the first sat every month. And I tells ya, American cars can be had for a a fraction of their price. Last year I saw a new 2004 Chevy trailblazer go for 9k. Brand new Grand Prix with 5k on it for 4200. I saw prices pretty darn low for pretty good cars. I didnt get one since I was in the market for a specific vehicle.
But good luck to you. Hope you get a fine one soon.

Malibu is reliable but not that good looking. Focus are good, cavalier is crap, Neon is still not as good as the competition. Taurus is not that reliable still (even in gen4 the tranny still wears out quick, and brown coolant, sagging rear spring, etc).

I would stay away from any V6 Accord due to auto tranny issue. Camrys are always good and made in US also, but more expensive. If you want only reliability and nothing else, like others said a crown vic is very good as the police and taxi use them all the time.

$15k is good enough to get you a less than 1 year old mid size american branded car from off lease or previous rental, almost new and smell like a new car.

From one 2001 ZX3 owner, I approve.

Then again, I got it new.

Focus was the best american car i've had actually - tough the interior/ seats are crap and the build quality is so-so. I'd shoot for an SVT focus though, at least that one would be fun to drive. That or a Civic SI - my friend just got one and the interior is better and the seats are totally awesome.

My Taurus was a complete POS, we had an 03 and the tranny sensor went at 5000 miles (had to take it in twice... the first time it didn't change anything) . At 8K the heat/ac fan started to make noise and at 10K it was dead.

I currently drive an A4 and that one is so so. The maintenance is not cheap (especially if you don't do it... you'll end up paying more), but the build quality is superb, the interior is well made and most importantly the car doesn't rust. Just about everything is zinc plated, so you don't have to deal with seized screws and bolts.
