Perhaps not all can be uninstalled, but I have 18 per-SP2 updates in my Add/Remove that can be uninstalled...

While he made a good point, I've never had to uninstall an update period, so it really hasn't been an issue.

18/113 != very high percentage. ;)

I concur. IMO, if you've reached the point where you have to start uninstalling updates, it's time to wipe the install and start fresh again. :p

Uh, you could uninstall SP1 and get a hole slew of update possibilities back.

If, instead of an operating system, it were a car that had been recalled 113 times, the Justice Department would be doing a dance on the manufacturer?s head while Ralph Nader chewed on its ankle.

That is one funny quote!!

But as others have said here it is not fair to compare cars to operating systems--- if your computer crashes do to faulty code it is a lot less serious than if your car crashes do to faulty designed wheels.

I'd have to say I'm over all satisfied with XP... but it could be a lil better for the money :/

The odd thing about software, is that we truely have nothing to compare it to. In the real world, there are limits set to physical items; if you crash your car in to a wall, it will get crumpled. If you drop your monitor from 20 feet up, it will break, and the manufacturer will tell you that it's your own fault. Even bank vaults have limits, as no one is going to garuntee their vault survives a volcanic flow, or a nuke, or some other massive source of damage.

Software, on the other hand, is held to different standards. You have to expect people to do things they shouldn't be doing, and keep the program from screwing up, because a crash is not acceptable. Your security has to be 100% too, and you must anticipate(and take care of) every way someone might try to break in to your system, otherwise you have a problem. In short, software is the only thing we expect to be perfect, and if the physical world is any measure, that's not possible. Sure, it could be better(more stable specifically), but I don't think we're ever going to be getting rid of security patches any time soon.

Who cares, at least they bother to fix problems. I don't mind it for stuff I do, xp is very powerful and stable. I use linux for my server so I really don't care :)

I love XP.

An update only screwed me one time. I updated some patches and when i went to burn a program, NERO used 100% of my CPU and would Buffer Underrun (i had it on) if i did anything else. I uninstalled/installed nero, uninstalled patches and was screwed. I just ghosted back and was fine.

Would you guys rather have them not fix and address problems? Anybody who doesn't consistantly update their computers is a fool.

Yeah - I'm not a fan of WinXp myself - but come on now...

Windows has millions of lines of code. You can't seriously expect it all to be ironed out when it comes out. Even the most stable of the Windows OSs (NTs,2000) use crazy amounts of updates. This guy should just be glad that MS is constantly working on updates.

Let's see auto manufacturers make all the parts in all their cars compatible with all the parts from all their previous models, plus compatible with all competitor's models. ie: Swap an engine from a 1990 GrandAm into a 2003 Jetta. Or take an alternator from a 1992 Oldesmobile and stick it into a 2002 Ford Escort. Then let's compare the software industry to the automobile industry.

Holy crap, people are whining that there are updates? I *PRAY* for updates from companies like Creative Labs, and i'll be lucky if they release an update once a year. At least MS is ontop of things.

Wow, surprised to see no linux fanboys saying how great their OS is... guess they realized that getting nightly builds every day and recompiling daily is worse. (specifically bashing Gentoo ;)). If you choose a stable version, you get less features. as ndee said, windows for desktops, *nix for servers ;)
