My dad's getting a notebook for xmas and he wants one with a 17in screen, but his budget is around 1500. He also wants good support and service. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've been looking for the same thing. I've more or less narrowed it down to the Dell Inspiron 9200 or one of the Toshiba Satellites. I think Toshiba has the s609, s620, s607 and some others. You might find a sale on the Toshiba at Best Buy or something. For the Dell, they are pretty affordable after you apply one of the frequent coupons.

People like Sony, but that's too expensive for me.

My dad has a Toshiba notebook right now and he hates it. The screen has broken like 3 times, and the warranty doesn't cover replacement on problems with the monitor, only repair.

Yeah I was looking at the Dell too, the price is a bit high though (for what you get).

HP ZD7000 series, w/rebates you'll probably get it down to $1500 at the B&M stores.

I paid less than $1500 for my Inspiron 9200
Get on one of the deals where they have 15-20% off with free shipping.
I just chose the basic package and upgraded ram, HD, and added a dvd burner myself.
Much cheaper than Dell was asking.
I love mine..

How are the HP notebooks? I've seen them pretty cheap, but are they of decent quality?

PCMag really doesn't like HP notebooks, but other magazines do. I guess its scattered. Anyway he's probably gonnd get the 9200 if he can't find one at CompUSA (he says they had a lot of 17" ones there for sale).

How did you add a dvd burner? Did you have bezel issues or are you using a dell part?

Thanks!

I like them, I really dig the keypad that it comes with. It also seems like it's well built.

definitely go with the HP. i've not seen Toshiba 17"-ers around $1500, but the HP's can get there. keep a vigilent watch on the sales ad for about 3-4 weeks and you should hit the jackpot. IIRC however, the current 17" model most BBY's have in store retails for like $2000 and you prolly won't see more than $200 MIR. Go in and talk to them, see what they have. Also see about custom ordering a zt7000 from HP.com and just doing what the other dude did, add own RAM etc. GL

I added an nd-6500a.
It's bezel is a abit narrower than the stock Dell bezel.
everything else just slid into place.
