having some problems with some of the servers on the network dropping connections and disconnecting.

is there a tool/software that will help me monitor connections and see what servers on my network are up and the rate that they go down?

That sir, is quoted for truth. I use Nagios at work, and its feature are just plain amazing. Although in my opinion, the interface is kind of ugly compared to Zenoss...

Tarball? RPM??

what the hell are those?

kermalou, they are file formats typically associated with Linux. Your best bet for a decent, free network monitoring program is to use an open source Linux project, such as Nagios or Zenoss. You can even have the software send a page to your phone or pager, in addition to an e-mail if something goes awry.
