A good move from pro to ultra?

Hey all, at long last my Prophet2 GTS Pro oem arrived from newegg, and what did I do? I called up and got an RMA, and ordered the Elsa Gladiac Ultra for $75 more ($347). I was thinking that for an xtra $75, it will be a better investment for the new monitor I bought (Iiyama i90A), plus I haven't seen a name brand Ultra for this little yet, so any price drop with the advent of the G3 won't hurt me too bad. Plus, this was the retail version (sans 3d glasses), while he prophet was an oem, and for some reason, while my drives were oem's, i didn't really like the idea of my video card coming in an unsealed brown box. What do you guys think, did I waste my money? It's funny how I went from originally thinking of buying the Radeon, and I ultimately ended up with an Ultra (that decision was basically made up when Anand had his Win2k comparison).

You might have regrets very shortly with NV20 just almost here, although you might not want one, it is bound to cause a price drop for Ultra's.

Yeah, but like I said, I really don't think that will be a factor because most of the Gladiac's I've seen are $100 more, so this price most likely already reflects the price drop

I really would not make that upgrade. Unless you are rich OR it is an AWESOME deal.

You are not going to see much of an improvement to warrant the extra $$$.

$75 more for a retail Ultra rather than an oem Pro? Actually, I'm not rich, but I sold my current micron XP to my dad for his office (I bought it two months ago), and I don't need to tell you that you can build a super system for the money it costs to buy one, so I decided to go all out (well, not all out, I wasn't about to get a G3)

The performace increase from a Pro to an Ultra is minimal(like a few more fps). If you already have a Pro then stick with it, IMHO.

First off, Regarding the price, I wouldnt buy a G2 ultra just yet, go check out pricewatch, they are already dropping in price after the G3 got announced. Just wait till the Geforce3's acctuly get released, they will drop alot more. Second, You should go check out benchmarks on sharkyextreme.com or anandtech on Geforce2 pro 64 compared to G2 Ultra 64. If I was gonna get a video card, which I am, it will have to be a G2 ultra, or if I find a "hookup", A geforce3 :D. The Geforce2 64 meg cards are kinda pointless, they have almost exact FPS in every game up to 1024x768, only past that does it even show a bit of improvement. Anyhow, just wait for prices to fall, G2 ultra is already about $330 and dropping.

Well, I already bought it, so it's a moot point. I haven't seen any cheaper Ultras than the one I got for 347 (no shipping), except for the visiontek. I just don't like visiontek, maybe it's becaus ethey do so many oems. Its psycological more than anything i guess. As far as the Ultra is concerned, I went with it because the difference the retail Gladiac Ultra, and retail Prohet2 Pro was about $15. (I like retail, even if I pay 20-30 more dollars. Makes me feel a little more comfortable about the product)

Does Maxtreme drivers work with the Elsa Gladiac Ultra? I was thinking of picking one up to replace my Hercules Prophet II Pro.

SHIPWRECK: Hehe, thats cool if you want retail and dont really care about spending the extra cash, but let me just tell you, everything I have in my computer is OEM and runs very stable and never had any problems. That is just a mind thing you have set in yer head, and thats fine if you have plenty of cash to go around. I do also, but I also try and save as much money in the computer world as I can. Because it does add up. Yer right, some retail and OEM hardware difference is very small, but some retail hardware and OEM's(like VIDEO CARDS) can have a quite a bit of $$$$ difference.

I know a guy that works for Intel and from what he says the OEM and retail are the same cpu. They are not picked. If one runs at one bunch passes 1000mhz then its doesnt matter if its oem or retail. Thats the same with most things unless stated in the specs. The oem or of the same as the retail.

mem's right. I know some of my friends have already o/c their Prophet Pro to 230/460 which is equivalent to standard Ultra settings. They didn't have to add any extra cooling....the stock HSF was sufficient. Free performance boost!

Where have you been? Do a little research and you'll find success stories all over the web about o/c the GF2 Pro to get the same performance as the Ultra. DOH! :p

I defintily don't think it would be worth it to do that...you could o/c, and if your card won't oc that high, so what, the performance gain is minimal. I wouldn't say it is worth the $75.
