Ok, i need a good suggestion on a good HSF that will keep my 30ghz northwood cool. It idles around 30C ish, and goes up to 50~60C ish load. That just all on intel stock HSF. (Well its what the asus probe is indicating)

I need something thats quiet and better in terms of cooling performance.

I was thinking of the Zalman 7700cu but might not fit on the Asus p4800 deluxe.
Thermalright XP 90 + panaflo fan? (i cant find the XP 90s in stock anywhere!)

Any other suggestions? arctic cooling freezer4?

Thanks in advance.

I've got the 7700cu and it's worked well for me. I'm at around 42C load on a stock 2.8C northwood (it hit ~50C max when I was O/Cing it to 3.2 IIRC). I've actually had it idle down to 22C when a cold front came in...it wasn't very comfortable in the room when the only heat was coming out of the computer exhausts. There are plenty of other hsf's that'll drop your temps even more, but 7700 works well enough for me.

These temps are all from SpeedFan btw.

Thanks for the reply!

I just want to start abit of OCing this baby. But i dont like the sound from the intel stock HSF. I want HSF to give me better cooling because im a cool freak :D

protege5demon - Hows the noise on the 7700cu compared to intel stock HSF?

Would it fit my asus p4p800 deluxe?

Cookie Monster, to be honest, I had a junk/loud HSF on an older P4 1.6A before I got my 2.8C with retail hsf. So my perspective may be a little warped since the first thought that went through my mind was "wow, this retail hsf is a real piece of work! I can actually have a conversation within a few feet from my box." The 7700 has a 120mm fan and it is quieter, but I'm still in awe from the decrease in noise when I went from that garbage fan to the retail fan on the 2.8C. The one thing that gets at me every once in a while is that the 7700 doesn't have heatpipes, but who cares if it keeps the temps down to pleasant levels.

I'm having some problems getting into Zalman's site right now (www.zalmanusa.com), but they've got motherboard compatibility info for each of their cooling units. Just check out the 7700 product and there'll be some table showing compatible motherboards. My guess is that you'll be fine with that board, but check their site out first (obviously).

Add the recommended fan and have a good set-up for any future chip also.

Thanks!

edit - the thermalright xp 90 is compatible with socket 478?
There seems to be a number of different panaflo fans. Which one do you suggest?

Heh! I guess I'm in a 'Paintshop Pro Mood' today... :D

I run a 3.0GHz Northwood, too -- with a Tuniq Tower 120 HSF.

Here's a screenie for you (current temps).

If I felt like priming my CPU, it would go up another 10º C, but I don't, so take my word for it... ;)

BTW, unless you blow out your stock HSF with an air compressor occasionally, it's probably packed with dust. Hold on, I've got snaps of that somewhere too...

Here you go: Before & After (about 3 months of running 24/7 in Arizona). Look between the blades!!!

Anyway, my choice for a 3.0GHz Northwood? Tuniq Tower 120!

Thermal Takes Big Typhoon.

My NAS Box which is also 3.0 northwood idles very nicely at around 26-28C and will peak at around 40C tops on load. But its not overclocked and i replaced the fan with a AC model.

Not to discourage you from buying a new cooler, but don't expect too much OCing from you NW 3.0 GHz. Probably It'll max out around 3.4 GHz... I have a 2.4C running at 3.2 stable; posts at 3.4 GHz but can't pass dual Prime 95 testing.

Whatever, an aftermarket heavy duty cooler will give you a quieter and cooler system, even at stock speed.

Life is funny, isn't it?

I remember... a couple of years ago... we paid extra to get boxed Intel CPUs, because they came with that wonderful factory heatsink fan!

How times change, eh? ;)

I know what you mean with the intel stock HSF being a dust magnet.
The Tuniq Tower sounds nice but newegg doesnt seem have them in stock.

zeeon2003 - Ive tried OCing on the 3ghz already on the stock HSF during winter. (yea it idles 25 or lower in winter). I managed to reach 3.6ghz, but ive decided for stock frequency ftw.

Current choice that im looking into

Tuniq Tower 120
Thermalright XP 90 + panaflo fan
Zalman 7700cu
